Same old question: will 75hp on 24' pull a tube

It seems like when this question has been asked, that there are a ton of variables. Seems like a huge difference from how a 22' will perform compared to 24'.

I am looking into a pontoon for the 1st time. I have found a 1997 24' cruiser style with a mariner 75hp. I do not know the diameter of the logs. I beleive it is a 4 stroke motor.

I was told that it would run about 25mph with 8 people on board. I am curious if anyone thinks that is accurate and if it would pull a tube or a 2 person tube with maybe 4 people on board.

Is there a particular prop/pitch that would be best for pulling a tube on a 24' with 75hp?

I appreciate any info.
Thanks!!!

I doubt if you'll make it to 20 and certainly not to 25... Yes it will pull a tube. With 4 people on board, I wouldn't look for more than 15 mph.[/COLOr

Is there a particular prop/pitch that would be best for pulling a tube on a 24' with 75hp? Unless you want to change props when cruising or pulling a tube, I would choose a prop that will give you about 5800 R's without a tube.
A guess to start with would be an 11 pitch.

I appreciate any info.
Thanks!!!

Good Luck

My father has a 25' Crest with a 50 Evinrude and it runs around 14 on GPS. He has pulled the grandkids on tubes and ski's. Granted they are not flyin but they have fun. The 75 horse should do you just fine unless you are looking to have the kids start slalom skiing.

Is 15mph a good speed to pull a tube? What is the preferred avg. speed for pulling a tube?

That all depends on the person(s) on the tube. In my younger days, 30 was a good speed. Now 15 is just fine. Young kids will like 10 - 15.. More adventerous persons will want 20 - 30.

25 MPH sounds mighty optimistic for a 75 horse on a 24 footer. I'd GPS it on the test run. In terms of what's fun for tubing, anyone over ten will be bored tubing below 20 MPH. I pull my seven year old at around 20 MPH and I have to take her over every wake I can find to keep her interested, but her friends often want me to slow down. So I guess the short answer is, "it depends." Know that's not what you're looking for, but hopfeully it helps some. Good luck.

I've got a 22' tri-toon with lifting strakes and a 135hp mercruiser IO. Four people in the boat I can pull a two person tube at around 25mph.

Now that's with three logs, lifting strakes and 135hp. Btw tomorrow for the 4th of July we will be maxing out the boat with 14 people. I don't think there will be any planing on that boat ride!

My old pontoon was 20 ft with honda 90 hp 4 stroke, GPS was 21 tops with 2 people on it. Kids were bored on it due to not being able to swing out of the wake with it because rope wouldn't come out of water to allow it with the set up on it. Now my new tri tune kids love, we pull at approx 20 MPH depending on water conditions.

I have a 1999 Super Suntracker 240 with a 75 hp engine. With 2 people aboard we GPSed it and the best we got was 22mph.... really it was around 18-20 most of the time. When we get the family on there it slows to around 15 i would say... pulls a tube.. but not much action goes along with the pulling unfortunately... fairly tame

I am considering the Pontoon Water Glide system before upgrading the engine. From what I hear that should give quite a boost in overall speed.

Look into the newer "steerable" tubes from sportsstuff. we bought the slalom jockey 2 person and ot works great behind the pontoon. My 10 and 12 year old nephews have no trouble steering outside the wake when I'm driving the boat straight. Also will do 360s with one ride on the tube.

What size motor do you have on your boat. I just bought a 2person sportsstuff speedzone 2 tube and i'm wondering if my 115 will pull it.

Re: Same old question: will 75hp on 24' pull a tube

I have a 70hp Johnson (suzuki) 4 stroke on an old 20' pontoon with a 3rd toon added. I can pull "regular" tubes with just me and a spotter and get them out side the wake and "fling them" as I can get to about 25mph like this. With 4 or more people on the toon I just don't have enough power to fling the tubes and we take the "doable" steerable slalom jockey tube and it works just fine at speeds down to 15mph. My fully loaded, 8 people on board + tube behind speed is ~18mph but as soon as I attempt to turn sharply my speed drops off quick to about 10mph. With just me and a spotter my pontoon "planes off" at around 14mph so I can actually bank into turns so I can maintain a 15+mph turning speed and give a pretty good thrill ride on regular tubes. I have a new dedicate 14x13 "Turbo Pontoon1" stainless prop I just installed and am going to give it a try tomorrow and see how it works over just a standard 14x13 OMC aluminum. It has monstrously huge "elephant ears" with nice cupping and porting.
