Does the 165 horse 6 cyl. mercruiser take the same outdrive as the 470 170 horse 4 cyl, are the outdrives interchangeable? are they the same gear ratio?

Re: same outdrives?

are you talking about the upper or the lower?????/ your gear ratio is in the upper and if your lower is a alpha 1 gen 1 you can put any alpha one gen one on even if it's off a 260

Re: same outdrives?

Just want to know, if I take out the 6 bolts connecting the outdrive to the transom, remove the whole outdrive, can I put on the other one?

The inline 6 is 1.65-1
The 470 is 1.84-1
Some say you can re-prop but it`s better with the correct ratio.

Re: same outdrives?

double check by looking for the stamped number on the port side of the upper drive (will say something like 1.84R).

If you're running the 1.84 gear and swap to the 1.65, it'll be hard to account for it using a prop change and still get good performance.

the other way, depending on specifics, might be fine but would require a prop change

addition: the change in gear would require on the order of 4" prop pitch change...
