Is Spar VARNISH vs. Spar URATHANE (sp?) the same thing?

Varnish has become an ambiguous term as of late. Varnish is not varnish but is polyurethane. It's tougher and better color retention(less yellowing) than the varnish of past. Better living through chemistry.

OK, great! I was just wondering because I picked up some 3M 5200 at my local lowes and saw that they have minwax spar urathane (sp?) also.

I'm not an expert by any means on this, but what I've gathered about SPAR varnishes/urethanes is that the intention is for outdoor use. The properties/intended use listed on the label is what you really want to look at more than anything. Beyond that, then you want to consider how well it penetrates, and how well other substances will/will not stick to it depending on what you plan to do with it.
