Hi folks;

Looking to launch from Perez Cove end of this month. Will be paddling and trolling about the Bay's shores. Wondering what I might be fishing for. If you had one or two baits to choose which ones? We'll be on a 16' Scanoe and casting a Salt-Striker/King Kat combo. Appreciate any info. I'll post up some pics upon return.

Thanks!

You could be chasing cod, yellowtail, calico bass, sand bass, barracuda, bonito, mackerel and rock fish. Might be a bit late for some of these and you may not find them close to the shore, but you are always going to see the bonito, rock fish and occassional cod.

... well AZminyard, whats the ol adage about fishing? :)

Here are a few pics of the stay and bay accommodations. They are top shelf and very user friendly. The first sets are of the Hotel/Marina and the dock launch @ Perez Cove. You have a Hotel, Marina and beer/bait shop all next door to each other. As we got underway we noted the sea plant life is alive and well. We set course and made our way to within a few hundred yards of the inlet to the bay. So just past that levee and watch tower is the Pacific. To much for our scanoe :)

... the next set is of the bay area. You see all sorts of vessels. Several coves with mooring and 72 hour stays. Lots of beaches, docks and parks with tables, palm trees and spectacular views. Yup thats the dock at SeaWorld. Because most of the area we were in was no wake, swapping or tipping was not a fear. There is also a good pic of trying to land the fish that got away. :) Also when the mist/fog rolls in you high tail it for cover. We were informed that was not common for the early afternoon. It was way kewl. The last pic is of course, miller time...

cheers

Looks like you had a good time. I wish I'd seen this thread before your trip, but for future trips, here's my observations. Spotted Bay Bass are plentiful in the weed beds at high tide all around the bay. Small swimbaits or blades retrieved fast over the tops of the weeds work great. Here's one of my bigger spotties:

Out by the jetty you're more likely to get Calico Bass (aka, Kelp Bass), which are bigger but harder to lure out of their hiding spots in the rocks

Small halibut are plentiful in the shallows, and you can find big ones in the deeper parts of the bay if you have a good depth-finder.

Lastly, I would not eat anything caught in Mission Bay, as it receives runoff from all over the San Diego area.

Sorry for the 20-20 hindsight lecture, but really I just wanted to post pics of my fish!

... great pics there surfdog

it was a lot of fun and all the things you need in close proximity. thanks for the tips. the fish you caught look healthy enough but will heed the warning next trip. catch-n-release. there also looks to be a nice mountain lake outside SD about 20/30 miles on East I-8. Is that an Indian res lake? You can see it from the interstate but not real clear on how to get to it.

Dear azlakes, If you are comming in on I - 8, shortly after you pass Alpine you will see signs for "lakesid and Lake Jennings rd". You will first pass Lake Jennings which is good for trout, bass, catfish, crappy, and blue gill. or you can pass by Lake Jennings, come down a steep hill to a four way stop. Turn right on El Monte Rd. and it will take you to El Capitain resevoiur. San Vincente is closed for the next 4 yrs for a retrofit. Good luck and catch many fish.
