Guys, I'm considering getting a sandblasting outfit for the shop. I was wondering if any of you use them and maybe give me some do's and don'ts about using a sanblaster to clean parts with. What kind of media should I use for cleaning aluminum parts? Thanks.

Re: Sandblaster

OutboardJim, You talking about getting a pot blaster or a cabinet blaster. On the small pot blasters we used #5 sand for a variety of metal parts and fixtures. On the cabinet blasters aluminum oxide was standard media.

We are looking at a cabinet model. It's one of those with the built in gloves. I was wondering ob, is there anything on a motor that should not be sandblasted other than the cylinders?

Re: Sandblaster

Are you refering to internal parts like con rods and the like.If so they would be acceptable as long as they are stripped of their bearings.Definately no gears.Other than staying clear of eletrical components there is an array of uses for a nice cabinet blaster. If you lived here in south Texas you and me would become good friends. :) Just a hunch, but I'll bet this will go to the projects forum.

ob is right on. Remember when you're sand blasting away, it DOES remove metal.

c/6

Hooty
