Sanity check - how much water should drain from exhaust manifold ?

Hi all - looking for a sanity check. I winterized this weekend according to my Volvo Penta manual, hours on iboats, Seloc manual, and youtube videos :))

I have a Volvo Penta 5.8FL with SX drive. Only used in freshwater.

Ran engine on muffs for approx 20 mins.
Changed engine and SX drive oils.
Ran engine on muffs for approx 20 mins.
Engine temp got to 160 so I knew thermostat was open.
Shut off engine and I probed and drained the engine block and a lot of water came out.
Then I moved to the exhaust manifold and removed the front hoses to drain it (no drain plugs for this yr. manifold). I probed and drained, and drops of water came out. No rust/scale, etc. Then I muffed in 5 gal antifreeze and fogged motor.

I need a sanity check on the amount of water (drips) that came out the exhaust manifold. Is that what I should expect ? Seems like there should be more!

Thanks!

I've never really measured the amount of water in them, but it's at least a quart each side. There is still water in them, they are just plugged up

Grrrrr.... Thanks for the clarification. I'll stop by the boat and try it again. I'll use a real long probe this time.

First thing I thought of when I read this is that you pulled the hose off the front/"high" end and it couldn't drain out. I'm not intimately familiar with the exact setup and I'm surprised there isn't a drain plug. In my experience the drain plugs are usually on the end/side more towards the stern because the engine sits at a slight angle. I would look at pulling the hose off the other end to see if that will let it drain.

Ok, follow on question....

If there was some water in the exhaust manifold and then I muffed in 5 gal of antifreeze, shouldn't that water have exited and replaced by the AF ?

Good chance of it, if you are looking for a 100% sure answer, don't expect it. Even if someone did say it would be perfect, they would be just guessing, it's not their manifold.

Thanks again. Just needed a sanity check on the "theory" of antifreeze in the motor.

I'm still going back to the storage lot and triple checking the manifold. Remove both front and rear hoses and really probe it. An extra hour of maintenance better than spring time repairs :)
