Howdy gang!

I was wondering if anyone here fishes for Saugeye? There is a lake not to far from the house that is supposed to have a fair number of them in it. I would think that they would be similar in every respect to Walleye.

Any pointers, receipes, etc about them?

Best baits?

Thanks again,
Lowell

I have caught a few while walleye fishing. Run a bit smaller but hit walleye baits and tasted just as good from the pan.

We have walleye and some lakes have sauger around here.
And a very very few of the hybrid saugeye.

They are all good eatin.

The sauger max out at about 17 inches.
Not sure how big the hybrids get.

Fishem like walleres.
jig/minnow, crawler, crankbait minnow, or inline spinner.

I fish for them on the lake where I live in central Ohio. The state stocks a lot of them. We catch them all year long. Caught some big ones through the ice this year. I use both live bait and artificial. Best results now with minnows on my lake. Great eating.

What's your home lake? bball? Once I get the boat put back together I'm going to head up to paint creek. That's about 45 min north of me.

Most folks can't tell the difference in saugeye and walleye, in taste or looks. Saugeye are capable of 10-11lbs in the central U.S.-not far behind the ave large female walleye in most central waters.
Anything you use for wallys will take saugeye, especially if it includes nightcrawlers or shadraps.

Very simple to tell them apart. The Wisconsin and Minnesota DNR identify Saugeye as Sauger. The white spot is the clue.

Paint Creek has a good population of saugeye, as does Rocky Fork Lake.
I catch them below the spillway at Paint Creek, catch them at Rocky trolling, or casting. In the early spring, or late winter i use green twister tails with a bobber at the spillway. At Ricky, i use a spinner jig with a minnow or night crawler on the jig. Have caught them on small rattle traps as well.

In central Montana we have a lot of them in our rivers but the sauger is listed as a fish of interest. That makes a saugeye lumped in with the sauger we can only keep one a day . They get a lot bigger that a sauger but feed and act like a sauger. here is our state record stats for a saugeye.
Saugeye 15.66 lbs. 1/11/95 Fort Peck Reservoir, Squaw Creek- Myron Kibler

Three year old thread, guys????

Hossman, we really recommend "search" for getting information but do not think it is a good idea to resurrect and hijack old threads.

It is a much better idea to start your own thread.
