Save Gimbal Housing?

My backyard boat mechanic sent me this picture of the gimbal housing. He said I might be able to save the gimbal and use some extra sealant and see if it leaks or not. He said it would be a gamble on the gimbal

Or could it be welded?

Obviously I am a neophyte and would appreciate any input.

Thanks,

Kevin

Re: Save Gimbal Housing?

The website now says there are kits available for Volvo, so you may want to call them and ask more about it.

The only unconfirmed problem with that kit is it may/looks to be a one time use only as the rubber bellows seems to be attached to the kit leaving the question for what to do with for the next bellows change.

Other than that kit, the most recommended way to repair that is to install a new housing.

There have been a very few past members that have repaired them with what they said to be a success.

If you go with a repair, you may want to do a search to see how they did it. Mostly it will be found under a mercruiser repair but same concept.

Good luck with your decision of what way you would like to go with the fix.:)

SO some people have been able to repair with success? Or at least a "few"?

Yes here is one easy one that I could find that comes to mind, I believe there are two others floating around in the archive between 2010 and 2013.

http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser.../my-gimbal-housing-repair-attempt-551959.html

Be sure to google corroded/busted mercruiser gimbal housing repairs for more information. Just bear in mind this procedure is at your own safety risk and not really recommended.

Good luck.:)
