Putting a boat back together (I bought a basket case) and was about to install the outdrive when I turned it over by hand and felt some "roughness" to it. Ok, pull the drain and not bad, no metal in it.
Put it in neutral and turn over by hand, still rough which told me it's a problem in the upper end. Hmmm, also looks like the seal at the input shaft may have been leaking so I pull it apart to look it over and, bad news.
One of the tapered roller bearings is toast, the "cage" is in pieces with metal shavings everywhere. Gears however look to be ok. Take it apart and clean, new bearings on order.
The problem, I do not trust that the shavings did not get into other areas. I've never torn an OCM outdrive apart and looking at the manual and the need for a lot of special tools I am in no hurry to try it.
So, hoping against all the odds, is there anyway a guy can clean it without tearing it apart? Do I dare put the new bearings in, and run it? Should I just stop and send it in for a rebuild? If so who would you folks recommend. (The shop I used to use went belly up this year and I don't what happened to the mechanic.)
Again, this is an OMC Cobra. (Mid 90s)
