Putting a boat back together (I bought a basket case) and was about to install the outdrive when I turned it over by hand and felt some "roughness" to it. Ok, pull the drain and not bad, no metal in it.

Put it in neutral and turn over by hand, still rough which told me it's a problem in the upper end. Hmmm, also looks like the seal at the input shaft may have been leaking so I pull it apart to look it over and, bad news.

One of the tapered roller bearings is toast, the "cage" is in pieces with metal shavings everywhere. Gears however look to be ok. Take it apart and clean, new bearings on order.

The problem, I do not trust that the shavings did not get into other areas. I've never torn an OCM outdrive apart and looking at the manual and the need for a lot of special tools I am in no hurry to try it.

So, hoping against all the odds, is there anyway a guy can clean it without tearing it apart? Do I dare put the new bearings in, and run it? Should I just stop and send it in for a rebuild? If so who would you folks recommend. (The shop I used to use went belly up this year and I don't what happened to the mechanic.)

Again, this is an OMC Cobra. (Mid 90s)

Well, no, and yes.

Since the oil circulates throughout the drive and metal pieces went into the rest of the drive, at the minimum, you need to completely disassemble and flush/clean everything and reassemble with new parts as required.

OMC used to send people to school for the Cobras. there's a bunch of specialized tools required. So unless you want to buy all the tools....you should probably send it to someone that has them + the experience to do it...

Rebuild, fill with fluid, run it on muffs, shift into forward, let it run at idle for a while, change the fluid. Rinse repeat a few times and see how it does.

What else can you do besides buy another drive that hasn't been grenaded?

Well, your other choice is the one I made........ find a donor boat with a Mercruiser drive in it....
