Last weekend I came across a 1970 Johnson 25. I am getting the carb cleaned and checking everything out. I drained the lower unit last night (oil looked good) and about to install impeller. What is the difference in the impeller repair kit and the water pump repair kit?

I think the Impeller repair would be just the impeller (maybe the impeller key also). The Water pump repair kit would contain (depending on which one you bought) the pump floor plate, water tube grommet, shaft o-ring, possibly even the pump housing.

If you open up the pump housing and see it scored or scratched up in any way, you need to replace the housing or else it could tear your new impeller apart or cause premature failure. If this was a "saved from the junkyard" motor, I would at least replace the impeller, water tube grommet, and shaft o-ring, as those parts are made of plastic/rubber and are likely to have deteriorated if they had not been recently serviced.

Thanks for your reply. I assumed that was the case. I am new to working on outboards and this motor was going to be taken to the junkyard. The owner said he couldn't get it to run right and was tired of looking at it so I got it for free! I am going through all components and it seems like a very simple motor. I have spark and compression, so impeller and carb are my projects for now and I will see what happens.

Get the BRP complete pump kit. It will include all the parts needed plus instructions.

Nice score. :D Those old 25's are great motors. I would check over the ignition system really good too and see if the coils are in good shape. If they're cracked, then you'll want to replace them. Pretty much everything on that motor is interchangable with the 18 and 20 hp motors, with the exception of the carb, head and pistons.
