Help! I was cutting the rotted deck out of my 1971 Fleetwind with a multipurpose tool and didn't realize until it was too late that I was cutting through the hull. Now I have an 8" slice. I had purchased polyester resin for the deck restore but is it good to fill this cut? Or should I use epoxy and then cover over with glass and poly? Not sure how I can get the resin down in the cut without using a syringe or sand an angle into the hole. Just don't want to chance making the cut bigger. Thanks for your help. Mistakes like this really makes me angry and nervous.

I'm not an expert so not going to give advice but will say that you aren't the first here to do it and from responses I have read before it isn't a big deal. Pretty easy repair from what the experts here say.

We see this sort of thing on a regular basis. So, there should be a few threads of folks who have cut through their hull, just like you. :)

To repair the cut, I would do the following.

Fiberglass cloth on the outside of the hull
PB in the cut itself
Fiberglass cloth on the inside of the hull . . . Make your cloths extend a couple of inches beyond the cut
Prep the surfaces well before glassing
Don't do it again :hand:

And you won't be the last. The very first nail I drove on my very first home I owned and the very first renovation I did I drove that nail straight through a copper water line. I went from rookie carpenter to rookie plumber in a matter of seconds.

If that was my boat id glass the inside but on the outside id gently grove it with a dremel and fill with 2 part marine epoxy.Putty or paste.
