I can deal with quite a bit of slang, and they don't particularly bother unless they hit vulgar. "Buzz" words, however ...

Any chance we can find some synonyms for "double-down" and "unsustainable?"

The language is changing. We old folks who have made our living using language for years hate it.

Our culture is also changing and, like old folks always have, we think it is going to the devil.

I wonder what our grandbuddies and great grandbuddies will complain about when they are old and feeble.

As a father of two college girl's and a wife who's think's shes 20 again the most irritating word's that have ever came from a human's mouth would be "Oh My God" no matter how's it used...when its used or why it's used.

I think about this a lot. If you take a read of the Federalist Papers, or some other period document(s), you can see how much language has changed from then to when you started learning to read and write. "It's just the way it is", to use a well worn one. With that said, I also struggle with the whole process, and I tend to use proper writing even when texting. It's my meager attempt to try and delay the inevitable. But, of course, I am not consistent as I use a lotta slang hangin' here. So chill bro. Luv ya. All good  :)

Hmmm... Not to argue but I can think of a specific instance when the Admiral hollers OH MY GOD and it's music to my ears. ;)
Hey, this is a family-friendly website!

The mosty grating to me is, "like," as in, "I was, like..." It's, err, like living with Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

It's funny how much I can identify with that: I read CONSTANTLY, and much of it is period documents as well. Hence, I have a pretty solid stock of vocabulary. I also speak in public rather regularly (in a few different formats), and therefore have to be able to speak rather clearly as well (not to mention keeping an audience from going to sleep).

When I write and talk informally, however I tend to swing through all sorts of influential slang I've encountered in my life. You can hear the Detroit "street slang" come out sometimes, and the Tennessee influence come out other times. So, I'm with ya' QC ...

... props. Peace out. :D

LOL. I speak publicly as well. I am also a salesman and I have described myself somewhat as a Chameleon. I am very happy speaking California Surfer boy, California-Mexican-American Cholo, Boardroom, and I usually throw in some Truck stop profanity which has got me in trouble when I crossover at the wrong time  I have another twist as well, I hang out regularly with Brits and Aussies and I use a mish mash of daily vocabulary that no one understands but me  Good on ya mate, Sayonara senor, Cheers!

I agree. As one who was forced to read Beowulf and the Canterbury Tales as written for an English Lit class what seems eons ago the evolution is inevitable.

It's all good. Language is whatever floats your boat, but sometimes that dog don't hunt. It's like... you know... whatever. Nuff said.
