Gentlemen,

I am new to the forums so pardon the question(s). Is the 228 just a small block chevrolet 305 cid with perhaps a different rotation? Are the parts for this engine the same for an automotive 305cid? Gaskets, Pistons etc?

Thanks

Block is the same.Pistons the same,Cam might be different.Casting plugs(freeze plugs) are brass(salt water eats them).Head gaskets are usually stainless.
The circ pump has a stainless plate and different impellers.
They do make a different rotation motor but in all single applications it's a standard rotation.Twin motor setups usually have a L and R rotation.J

There are also a number of marine specific ignition and fuel related parts that can not be used from cars. Maybe post what you are trying to do, but there are a ton of posts on the differences between marine and auto.

Gear JerryJ,

Never heard of a stainless head gasket. I was contemplating an engine rebuild and thought automitive would work! I appreciate all of the responses and the demonstrated knowledge. If rotation on a single is the same as automotive the camshafts should be the same gear drive for the oil pump.

Thanks!
