mmmm yummy. I love scallops. Can you get gulf shrimp by snorkling too, or are they too deep?

I'm kinda jealous of you Florida boaters.

Re: Scallop pic's

you either have to cast net shrimp. or have a commercial license, and drag a net for them.

then there is the Florida lobsters. in the Keys, can't wait till August.

Re: Scallop pic's

I used to live in Florida. My family used to go "pick up" scallops (that's what we called it) in Port St. Joe bay and Apalachicola bay when I was a boy. Really good eatin'! I don't think you can do that now without a license. We also; caught mullet in the gill net, gigged flounder in the bay, picked up oysters, caught shrimp on the shrimp boat, caught blue crabs with a net and neckbone on a string. All that stuff seemed like normal every day stuff at the time. Now it's a distant memory.

Oh yeah, I386, been here for quite a while and can remember the way things used to be, but what the h***, It's still all good if you know what I mean. Sorry, but the commercial interests had one thing in mind....profit. And for way too long they had the run of this place. It took Florida Sportsman magazine and editor Karl Wickstrom to start a grassroots effort to stop the gill netting of mullet in state waters. And that happened in 1996. You would have thought we wanted to tie up every mullet fisherman and burn him at the stake. However, can you imagine being at a ramp and finding 200 - 300 mullet gutted for their row and the carcass left to wash up on our beaches? That was a common site at the ramps in Englewood, Fl. where I lived for ten years. I think Texas also has some strict netting rules and they enjoy a huge recreational fishery.
Anyway, off the soapbox and back to yesterday's scalloping. No they aren't that large, but in that wine and cream sauce with those hushpuppies they were'nt half bad :D

Those are the spiny lobsters, no claws, right? How do they taste TD-- different from Maine lobsters?

Only shellfish I ever caught myself was in my early 20's. crawdads from a little springfed lake in N. Michigan. We dived down and netted 'em, boiled up a few dozen at a time. Like little tiny lobsters, they were. Went good with a nice cold beer or 2! Good times.

...this thread is making me hungry.

We used to tie bacon to strings and drop them into the mud holes lining the banks of creeks and rivers. They would clamp down and we would pull them out. Was a lot of work for not much meat, but we were kids and it was fun.

Your not the only one! Just came in off the river and I am starving.

All I got in the fridge that sounds like any of this “making me home sick” food, is Capitan Iglo fish sticks.

I want some jumbo shrimp, corn fritters, red beans & rice, and a cold beer! :D

I was just down at St George Island for a week. Everything in the Apalachicola Bay area was for sale. Alot of Concrete slabs next to the bay. That was my first visit to the forgotten Coast and I really enjoyed myself. I lived in Daytona for four years and did some shrimping and crabbing. Loved to shore fish in Port Orange for Blues when they were running. I worked the as the night cook at the Holiday Inn next to the race track because I could make $1 more an hour than as a mechanic at the airport. I would take a paper bag full of crab for supper and drive everyone nuts.

Nice boat and car there Rick!

Nice thread TommyA. All Florida real estate is for sale.....just gotta pay the right price :D And the car and boat are both a little aged, just like me! However I have been tootin the Florida fishin horn for many a year to friends and family out of state. Lived in a few different places, but always loved to call this place home. They'll just have to scrape off a little sand and roll me in when I'm done. :p Hopefully not anytime soon!

Thanks for sharing those pics TD. I posted recently that I wasn't a big fan of the lobster season after some bad experiences in the 90's. Looks like ya'll had a good time and even had younger kids to boot. Also were you there in mid August? And when does the season open? Is it still Aug. 01?

I had a TR3A until the divorce, but I still have the original owners manual for it. Hardback style with information on every aspect of the car. I believe it was a 1963.
