West coast of Florida..north of Pasco/Hernando county line north to Bay county. Season runs three weeks longer this year...starting today and running till the end of September..

Tasty little morsels that you spend hours catching and minutes eating!!

Here is a photobucket link of one of our batches that I cleaned using a shop vac!

No..I did not throw the shop-vac away. Liberal dose of bleach water and all is fine..make sure you take out the filter!!

Up here scallop season on George's Bank brings big giant Bluefin Tuna around the scallop boats and the tuna are easy pickings for a couple of weeks bringing big bucks for the few tuna boats that can make the trip. Most boats have to carry extra fuel, George's is about 130 miles and you need to catch 3 tuna to make the trip profitable.

What is the bleach for?

I have a place in Aripeka. On the way in if you go right of the island instead of the marked channel your in Pasco county instead of Hernando. Even though you are going to the boat ramp behind Carl's store. The FWC sits there like vultures.

The bleach water is used to thoroughly clean the vac..lets just say that scallop guts left in yer trash can for more than a day is a pretty disgusting smell...would not want the vac to have that "aroma"!!

Nice, triumphrick, I miss the days when I lived in Bradenton Beach scalloping. Post some more photos of this season. Thanks!

They been killing them pretty much everywhere. The shop vac rocks. Whoever thought of that one deserves a thank you.

Re: Scallop season starts..

we went out the 1st weekend and got our limit. 1st time for the wife and I. Had a good time even though we hit a few rain showers. Stopped off at the freezer for some lunch while some of the local kids were cleaning our take.
I like the shop vac idea but I like the "let's get something to eat while the local kids clean." better..

How are scallops on the half shell by the way? Can you eat them raw like clams?

That reminds me of the time I used my FIL's bandsaw to cut up a flash frozen Tuna into beautiful steaks. It never dawned on me that the heat of the blade would spread that fish all throughtout the works.

My FIL quietly cleaned it up the next day when it began to reek.

Also..heading out of Bayport in the morning..got a few friends from SC that I met a few months ago. They came here on vacation and gave us a heads up..we got a good offshore trip in for Doug and son Conner. Tomorrow we will be doing the scallop and maybe toss a few DOA's to get the trout or a silver Clark spoon for some macks....stay tuned for more pics...!!

We did real well the first trip. Me and my ten year old son 45 minutes in around 8 feet. Last trip sucked. Full moon tide and no vis in where we needed to be.

In here in the UK Scallop season starts in November to April but being a diver I get them when ever I go to the Scallop grounds. I always do well. 60-70 Jing scallops per dive (30-40 mins.)

Sorry King Scallops. Triumphrick. . . . Oysters are nowhere near as nice as Scallops. Try and cook them a little less. 5 mins max. My wife eats the raw like still pulsing. LOL it's why I married her
