Scan Tool for Shop

Hey guys. So I was considering purchasing the Mercruiser Scan tool but I wanted to get some input on what I should or shouldn't buy. Basically I am tired of the hunt and poke method of trying to find problems and I'm ready to step into big boy pants. I need to get the best overall scanner that will do the widest amount of engines and of course for the least amount of $ if possible. I appreciate any and all input.

But all the tools in the world won't help without the knowledge to use it. You have to understand basic engine and electrical troubleshooting.
There is no scan tool out there that is going to tell you what to fix, many times (Most of the time) the problem is a sensor reading out of it's range. No trouble code will be shown, you have to be able to see the problem.

Add a quality DVM, fuel pressure gauges and the OEM service manual covering the system you are working on and you stand a chance of troubleshooting and finding the problem. You can't use forums for troubleshooting problems.

I'm still in diapers myself but when I needed to troubleshoot why I was getting the beep every minute alarm, I figured it would probably cost $200 to take it to a shop here in SoCal so why not spend the $450 for the Rinda that I could use for both my boats which if I use it for maybe 3 times will pay for itself and also be able to help out fellow boaters here locally.

The scanner did alert me to the water pressure sensor being whacked out and by posting a question here on IBOATS to the location of the sensor, I replaced it and no more alarm beeping.

It also gives true readings on water temp, oil pressure, engine hours, etc. so I was able to verify the accuracy of my dash gauges.

I want my struggle to be the diagnosing:facepalm: and learning:facepalm::facepalm: part as Don mentions not being without a tool.
