Scared of my battery charger.

I picked up a GUEST on board battery charger, it charges off the alternator when the engine in running, but also can be plugged in like a regular charger aswell.

the batter that came with the boat when i got it (not new) was an interstate "mega-tron" deep cycle.

all it has ever had to run was the radio, untill I picked up a Motorguide wireless (model W55) trolling motor.

I plugged in my guest charger to AC and let it charge overnight, it was still on stage 1 charge the next morning.. which i figured odd... (stage 1 is the "main charge" then it goes to trickle and finally float...)

I headed to the lake and fired up the trolling motor and ran her up to full speed and the radio shut off..

odd.. put a voltage meter on the battery 10.6 volts. so I figure the battery was toast..

so I picked up a Stowaway Pro series batter that weights about twelve hundred pounds.. I put it in today at 3, and plugged in the charger.

I took the other battery home and to my shock it had ALMOST NO WATER in it.

my fault for not checking, but like I said, all it ever ran was the radio.. and it did that well.

I ran back out the the storage and the new battery was still on main charge.. I powered off the charger and put the meter on the battery.. 12.24V..

I cranked up the sterio and turned on the trolling motor and it would drop to 12.14 then come back top 12.2 or so when i cut stuff back off.

my fear is that NOTHING was wrong with the original battery, but that my charger did not stop charging when it was full.. and just boiled the water right out of it. The charger specifically says it safe to leave it hooked up for "extended periods of time"

No I dont know what the state of the new battery was when I hooked it up, perhaps it was almost dead, and it IS a big battery.. so maybe 5 hours later it was still not near fully charged (8 amp charger)

i plugged the charger back in and nothing happened, it didn't cut on.. nothing.. I don't know what to make of that.. left it plugged in

Im going fishing first thing in the morning, so its only going to sit over night, but now im afraid of the damn thing...

thoughts? opinions?

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

A battery IS NOT fully charged at 12.2 volts. In fact it is not even close at that point. 12.6 is fully charged battery. And your guest charger has nothing to do with the engine. It does not enter into the charging picture at all when it is not plugged into AC. The alternator on the engine charges the starting battery through the large battery cables when it is running. If you are running a trolling motor off the starting battery you asking for trouble. Trolling motors draw (in your case) about 42 amps maximum. Depending on the output of your engine alternator (probably less than 15 amps if an outboard) you would need to run the engine wide open for three hours to make up for that one hours use. Again -- you Guest charger operates ONLY from AC household current and does not charge from the engine.

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

the charger has an alternator power module, and does, in fact, charge both the trolling and cranking battery. the alternator wire comes from the motor to the charger.

im pretty sure the charger is bad, I came in this morning and it was still running stage 1 charge, and was hot as hell. I could hear the water in the battery bubbling. I disconnected the charger and waited a few min, checked the voltage, 13.2V

I think its overcharging,I think it cooked the other battery.

Don't think I would trust it anymore. So you have a separate battery for starting the boat? A wire from the motor to the charger which runs on AC why? I had a charger permantly mounted with the leads permantly attached to the batteries, nothing to the motor anyways worked out good.

2 batteries one crank, one troll. the charger has 2 banks, one for each battery. the power from the alternator goes to the charger. im taking it back today, get my $250 back jack!

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

Give us a model number on this charger. It sounds like this thing has an ACR-like feature which is something I'm not aware of.

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

I think the OP's wiring could be messed up, posting up a wiring diagram would help.

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

there is nothing wrong with the wiring, the charger functions correctly with the very big exception of not shutting off when the battery reaches full charge. incorrect wiring makes
no sense given the issue.

im currently on the water and it is bolted down, no model number visable.

I assume your starting battery has been fine? Do the batteries have to be isolated or can grounds be tied together for these alternator module style? ie I would verify that the Guest recommended wiring was followed to a T. Does the problem go away if you remove the alternator connection/module?

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

Makes sense that these would surface but -- the following statement from the literature is "a little bothersome. It says: quote: " ---ensuring that all batteries are fully charged."
As I pointed out earlier, a troller can suck 40+ amps out of a battery in an hour. Unless this boat is an I/O with a 60 amp or larger alternator, it won't keep up with the troller battery. An outboard certainly will not.

Marketing and reality are usually two different things. ;) My guess is that they are marketed toward the bass boat crowd. Most new 150hp and up outboards have 60-70 amp alternators. They might get a very slight benefit when they run down the lake at full bore.

Re: Scared of my battery charger.

Just a thought- is the charger set correctly to match the type of battery you're charging (wet-cell, gel, AGM)? They have different charge profiles.
