Scary Cranking

I have a 85Hp Evinrude (I think 1979)sometime when i try to crank my motor the spocket on my starter doesn't jump all the way to the fly wheel but just spins in place...Anyone suggestions

Put a couple drops of WD-40 on that little piece of shaft right above the bendix gear and work the bendix up and down. Check all the conntections from the battery to the starter. Make sure they are clean and tight. <br /><br />If the problem pursists....jump the two large posts' on the solenoid. If the bendix consistently engages the flywheel when this is done, replace the solenoid.<br /><br />If nothing helps the problem, final solution is a starter overhaul and cleaning to replace the brushes.

Make sure you have a known good battery. Starter motors need to spin full speed to run the bendix up the shaft. A weak battery will not allow full starter RPM.
