Re: Scary Hitch

Scary looking bumper mount hitches were a staple in trailering before steel bumpers were ruined by cheap thin bumpers with bumper shocks.
Scary I agree, the chain mount bumper hitches are the best looking. ;)

Bumper jacks were a hoot as well, hard to remember but not that long ago not near as many folks had pickemup trucks and suburban type vehicles and towed all kinds of junk with cars, seems like trailer rental places were literally killed by everyone having a pick up.

Amazing what a little bit of metal will suffice for a hitch. :eek:Maybe for moving a garden trailer around in the yard?

Re: Scary Hitch

don't underestimate a bumper hitch, when it is bolted to an actual METAL bumper that is welded to the frame. I've seen stuff towed with bumper mounted hitches like that one that would have torn a modern class 3 hitch off a light truck.

Hasn't been that many years ago, well 30 years isn't that long is it?

I remember my parents pulling an old pop-up camper from Bloomington, Il to Canada and back with one of those clamp to the bumper hitches from U-haul. Just had to stop and tighten it up every now and then.

Half ton pickup bumpers used to be close to the right height for towing too. Modern pickups have been jacked up way too high.

I agree. There is probably a very sturdy hitch bolted to the frame. What you see in the pix is just the ball tongue.

Re: Scary Hitch

Nothing scary about it. This is a class 1 hitch for light duty such as your small utility trailer, single snowmobile or jet ski trailer, etc.
