This is a photo of the outer race of a front wheel bearing from my Landcruiser. I just about fell over when I saw it. I had a bit of a noise from that wheel (nothing too serious) and thought, since I had nothing better to do, I'd check it out.

Whadya think?

Re: Scary!

Must be from the inferior American scrap steel that they buy. :p Either that or from those outback washouts you were driving through.

From those pictures you showed us, I don't think you could drive fast enough for those little pits to cause much trouble. You could probably get by with a greased up oak axle. :D

Re: Scary!

Nope, 'high quality' Japanese.....

Haven't done a water crossing since this one was new 2 years ago. So that rules out water as the cause.

Only noticed the noise at 80+mph. Yes it can go that fast and, no, not through the water, that's what the boat's for. :D

Chris...........

P.S. Boomyal, you in Washington state?

You pronounce that "High qwawrity" Chris. It's probably nothing more that the 'one in a million' defective ones. They really don't miss very often. I own a '91 Previa (jelly bean van) with 115k mile on it. Had it since new. It's never been to the shop. It burned out one dash lite and had a rattling catalytic converter. I finally replaced the plugs at 108K. Can't kill it. Can't beat the 'qwawrity'!

Yes, I live in Vancouver USA, right across the mighty Columbia River from the peoples republic of Portland Oregon. Got it's name from the same Capt George Vancouver that Vancouver BC was named after but we were first. Actually we were originally Fort Vancouver.

Can't believe toyota named a van 'previa' .

We get a similar looking van here called 'tarago'.

Aldo

Re: Scary!

Thats it, we get a slightly larger version called a tarago (9 seater with luggage space) and the seats fold down to make a bed.

I'm no doctor but I believe 'previa' is a serious medical condition in unborn babies. I think it literally means 'first'.

Chris, notice that there is no back door on Boomyals pic, haven't seen that version here.

Aldo

Aldo,

Left hand drive mate. The door could be on the other side. But then again, you could be right. Boomyal?

Chris.............

It does have a sliding door on the right side. This was Toyota's second US van model. First one was smaller, boxier and you sat over both the front wheels and the engine. The Previa, you just sit over the engine. They kicked the wheels out front. Both rear wheel drive. By the third model, they went to today's conventional transverse, front mounted engine with front wheel drive and sliding doors on both sides. I think it looks more like your Australian Model. They made the Previa from 1991 to 2001. Toyota makes a dizzying array of vehicles for worldwide markets.

We sure got far afield from pitted wheel bearings.

Re: Scary!

Ah Chris, thats nothin'. My wife told me one day that her drivers (left) side front tire was feeling like the brake was being applied to just that wheel on the highway, and would I look at it for her. Well for months there was a sound like the jingleing of a bell coming from that wheel, so I figured the bearing was shot out. I pulled everything apart and was suprised to find that there was no outer bearing to be found anywhere. The bearing cage, well, what was left of it, was wrapped around the spindle, and some of the rollers were still in there, don't know what happend to the missing ones. The spindle was smoked with a valley worn into the lower leading part of it. This was all thanks to Patterson Auto Shop in Pace Florida, who didn't have the right size socket to remove and replace the nuts that hold the bearing in place and pre-load the bearing during reassembly. They used the ole screwdriver and hammer methode to remove the nuts and to torque them during the reassembly process. Sorry thieving dirt bags. They charged me $150. to grease the front bearings, and only did one side, the drivers side.

Well, I spent three days out there with emory cloth reshaping the spindle, and putting it back together using the proper socket ( I borrowed one) and torque wrench. If you want something done right, do it your self. It wasn't pretty, but it worked just fine for another 150,000 miles and was still working fine when we gave the truck away.

So check this out. As many of you know, earlier this year we got my wife a Land Cruiser. Bought it from the original owner with all the service records. Well, we took it to Sears to have tires rotated, balanced and aligned, and they said it needed wheel bearings in the front. I checked the service records and the bearings had been replaced by a reputable shop in Gulf Breeze Florida not more than a year ago. Well "holy crapola" I say to myself, because I bet I know what I'll find when I get in there. Sure enough, the greasy little sons of puppies at the Gulf Breeze shop did the same thing that Pattersons did, they used a screw driver to remove and replace the nuts that hold the bearing in. Well, I removed the outer nut and fabed up a socket for the job, and replaced the bearings, races and even the brake rotors. Like I said, if you want the job done right, do it your self.

By the way, I called the previous owner of the Land Cruiser and told him about the quality work the shop in Gulf Breeze was doing for him (he has two other Land Cruiser and a LX 450) so now he uses the dealership.

Re: Scary!

The moral of the story. I only use dealer service or do it myself, using OEM parts.

Foreign car owners will use the dealer and OEM parts, domestic owners, generally will not.

I find that interesting.

Ain't that the truth!

That's why the rule is : only one person works on my boat. ME!

I recently had the gearbox rebuilt on the LC and the stupid mongrels dropped the input shaft pilot bearing into the clutch cavity (in the back of the flywheel), and I had to pay another mechanic to fix it properly. Which is why I'm in court in a month. To try and get the money back off the first bunch of idiots.

Well, I won't be letting anybody work on the LC in future either.

I could also tell you all about my girlfriends car, which I now maintain, but we don't have the server space. :D

Chris............

Edit : PREVIA is a medical condition to do with pregnant women. (I looked on Google)
