Schedule Writing Software?

I work for a medium-sized police department. We're always looking for a better working schedule, but devising one that will work is difficult because our staffing needs rise and fall over the course of the 24 hour day based on call load and other factors.

Anyone have, or know of, a software program that will allow me to plug in the number of staff needed at a given time of day or night and other typical scheduling parameters to identify potential scheduling options?

Thanks in advance.

Funpilot - thanks much for checking. I can't believe this kind of software doesn't already exist - it's a milliion dollar idea if this is the case.

What department was your buddy with? I know of a couple of computer guy / cops in the metro area and the agencies who made use of those guys were years ahead in their use of technology.

Thanks again.

MS Project might be worth a look, it works on a time line.
