I have a 5-7 min. informative speech to give in two weeks. I was thinking about doing a boaters safety one. I have to type an out line and do a works cited on at least two sources, I could use Iboats as one. Just looking for some links to free websites that I could find info and boaters safety topics-tips or any other ideas. I can use visuals like life jackets or print out a check list type thing to pass around the class. Its a oral communication 201 class. I thought this would be a good topic considering the area I live and most of my class mates are younger and just maybe some of them could use the info. Any ideas, help or advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you for any replies I get!

Any state department of wildlife fisheries and parks should have plenty boating saftey links or you could always google boating safety.

Being in the US, go to the US Coast Guard website. They should have an extensive section on boater safety, regulations and guidelines.

Thats exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the help. I knew this would be the best topic to chose because of the information I would get here! I will let ya know how it turned out eather next saturday or the saturday after that, my class is 9-12:40 saturday morning. The hardest part for me is stage fright but like the teacher pointed out the first day we are ALL nervous at first.. I think Im going to make a check list for a pass out that I can go over with the class and show the proper way to put on a life vest. The writing part Im fine with (already did all the english classes) its the stand up and get all shakey part I need to work on!

So thanks again to all who replied..

Eric, what is really scary, is when they video tape you, and the replay it for the class to critique. i lost 60 lbs, years ago after my first experience. of course i am not in the public eye any more, so i gained it all back.

Yeah that would get me, I don't think we are doing that. We watch other speeches and critique them but not the people in our class that I've heard yet. I like to have props to take some of the attention off me. The last one I did guitar tunning and adjustments with two different style guitars I broght in. Had the whole thing typed up and praticed, got up there and forgot half of what I was doing.. I didn't even attempt to play, knowing my hands would be nice and shakey. I figure with boaters safety I can get a class mate up there to demonstrate how to put on a life vest. Maybe do a power point to show the different parts of a boat. Boating is big here with the lake and the St. Clair river. Maybe it will help me next year out on the water or at the ramp. A full size boat can put there wake right on my lap pretty easy its happened once so far.

If you see the videotape afterwards, in my experience, people always do better than they actually thought they had done.

Have fun with it realizing your classmates all have to suffer the same fate.

I've done these are part of public speaking and communications courses throughout school and even early in my career to become a certified technology trainer. (My first one for the trainer course was 1.5 hours after I had a root canal) I thought I was terrible, but after watching the video later, I looked as normal as other folks.

Its always worse before you get up to speak, but just remember that you'll be your biggest critic and others aren't going to evaluate it the same way you do.

Good luck on your project.

My dad told me to imagine that everyone in class is buck naked and that should help to clam my nerves, nooo problem...

Ended up flawlessly reciting my entire presentation to the class hottie :D

(joking)

(well,,, joking about flawlessly reciting the entire presentation, not about the class hottie and lack of clothing there about :D)

Yeah I think its like 20% of your fear is actually noticed. I thought I did bad on the last one but the person sitting next to me said it was real good, I though she did a great job of keeping a straight face when she told me that...

Okay....... I am in front of classrooms and large crowds every week. Here are a few tips......

First - Remember you are the same person as everyone else. No one is better than you on your subject and they want to listen to what you have to say. Just be yourself..... DO NOT try and be something you are not.

Second....... If you make an error .....big deal! You are probably the only one who knows you make a mistake anyway.

Third...... PLEASE do not script what you have to say! Speak naturally and be confident.

Move around while you are speaking and make eye contact with everyone but do it one at a time. By the time you are done speaking to the class everyone has looked at you and you have scanned everyone at least once.

You will do fine.

I have taught classes to other instructors on how to overcome stage fright. I made them do an outline on how to overcome it...... bottom line relax and be yourself!

Want to be inspired about public speaking? Look up the you tube link to The Last Lecture..... Well worth watching.

Re: School assignment help..

So I got my grade back it was a 87% I went over the time limit by 2 mins, other than that I had a perfect score.. It went great and I got the class to laugh a few times. The only bad comment I got was about wearing a hat.

Thanks again for the help.
