I just had a '48-49' Scott Atwater 3.6 horse outboard donated to me. It seems to have low compression 65lbs. I thought at lease 100lbs is what would run and considered "good". I have been looking around the web and seeing powerheads being sold with 60lbs and advertised as "good compression" So did these run on lower pressure than standard?

Without having any official facts and figures, I think you are expecting too much. <>65 probably is ok. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the input. I do not want to tear this apart if the compression is acceptable . It will not start at the moment, its got spark and gas, but perhaps the valve reeds need to be looked at.

It should at least start @ 65psi, even if that is low (which has not been established).

yea I did no rings I ended up e-baying a power head. now I'm in search of a impeller. they seem to be like hens teeth. I was thinking I may have to fab one somehow maybe cut one out of rubber. it is not one with vanes, just the round with a tab type. any ideas?

Here is the next question. The impeller in this motor is the" round with a tang type" some refer to them as wobblers . All of the ones I have ever had dealings with were made of rubber, this one is more akin to plastic. Is that the way it is suppose to be ? Or is this thing just so old that it dried out. This may seem silly to ask but this is the first lower I have worked on that has stiff grease in it , so maybe the impeller is manufactured that way. Any insight on this would really help out . Thanks
