I have a 1946 3.6 HP lower unit and need to know if a 1948 impeller from a 3.6 Scott is the same. It fits the eccentric and housing, but the "leg" seems to long ? Is the leg suppose to "bend" or remain straight against the housing ? Could I trim the leg to fit ? I am replacing a cracked/blown powerhead on the 1946 with a 1948 unit and (hopefully) the 1948 impeller! The old wobbler crumbled during disassembly!

1946 and 1948 are the same, part number 463-5100. In fact, it continued to be used for many years. It should lay in there and cycle without any interference. The tab or leg is not functional as far as actual pumping goes. It merely does two things, separate the inlet side of the pump from the outlet side, and of course keeps it from spinning.

Thanks for the response. I apologize for the delayed thanks ! Seems like it should be up and running by end of holidays when I have time. Paint and reline tank and paint lower housing and put it together !

If all paint is removed from the lower unit it can be polished and look real good. jmo. If using red kote do more than one coat thin with MEK, and clean the cap threads real good before it hardens. also seal before painting. You probably know this, but sometimes I only learn by making mistakes.

I have lower unit sanded to 800 grit . Thought of polished bare metal. What would be used for a clear seal and finish coat ? If I go with aluminium primer / paint, should I seal coat prior to primer/paint ? This is my first !

I didn't put on any clear coat. I didn't know if I should. I would use a self etching primer as I've been advised to here on iboats. Hope someone with more knowledge than me can answer this.

For sure use the self etching primer if you want the paint to stay on. Follow the directions, some must be top coated within a certain time or it must be sanded. ("no-sand time").

I had decided to use an acid etch , with aluminum primer, dull aluminum paint color and top with clear. I had phosphorous etch for Studebaker tank cleaning.
