isnt in basic electrics black usually hot the positive/hot and the white ground?? i put on the new plugs for it, the directions say to put the hot wire in #2 and other in#1 holes of the new male end on the plug(it didnt mention colors though), so asuming black was hot. when i plug it to battery, and the rigger pulls the line in backwards? look! reeling in the rigger wire counter clockwise. shouldnt it be clockwise to reel in the wire? i switched the wires on the battery and it then reels in clockwise.

and also for some reason the rigger line release handle isnt stopping wire from coming out, what is wrong??

I think you will find that BLACK is negative and WHITE is positive in 12 volt DC wiring.
I am assuming this is a new unit you just purchased. If so, did you install the stopper beads into the wire cable? If you have the stopper bead on the cable, then check that you have the AUTO STOP switch in the ON position.
The downrigger should stop as soon as the bead passes through the gate passage.

Re: scotty eletrics wires backwards??

I have 2 of them on my boat. The wire spool is controlled by the brake/clutch pads. I suppose, (don't know for sure?) but some more will run either waay if the power and ground is reversed.
Does the counter still work or dies it count backwards, it is just a cheap whell thing and they constantly break if you use it a lot.
Scottie is really very customer service friendly, give them a call.
Did you check to see how the wires are connected to the battery? I have mine wired directly to the battery with an in line fuse and yes, I have blown the fuse, but rarely. There is an automatic over heat and reset built into the motor and when it colls down, it will reset by itself.

I think I read your posting wrong. How heavy is the downrigger weight your dropping over the side? I had to adjust the clutch on mine when I first started.

Re: scotty eletrics wires backwards??

thanks for the electric wire help, got it figured out, as well as it reeling in the rigger wire clockwise. :) thanks!

now my problem is still that there is no breaks to stop rigger wire from coming out??? i can pull line out and it seems the release lever does nothing

Re: scotty eletrics wires backwards??

They do carry a lifetime warranty if there is a service center close by. The cluth system is rather simple. I have not been into the new model with the single belt, but I would think the clutch system is the same. There are (2) two 9/16 nuts on the top of the wire spool, loosen the top one and tighten it up a little bit and see if that helps. If you are carful, take it apart and clean the inside and put back together in reverse order, really only 3-4 pieces plus 3 seperate cluth discs.

Re: scotty eletrics wires backwards??

OK, In home wiring two phases of 120VAC house current plus neutral, are brought into the breaker box. When these are used for 120VAC, black wire is hot, white is neutral and green is ground. The breaker box is grounded, and the neutral and ground are connected in the breaker box.

Red is switched hot in 120VAC or the other hot phase in the house for a 220VAC operation. White is always neutral, green is always ground.

Wiring for cars and boats is usually 12VDC. Black is ground or -12DC, red is +12VDC. White and the other colors are used for variable purposes, although outboards have tended to standardize, and some of the boat manufacturers have tended to standardize.
