Apparently its not ok to ask about the value of a boat on here and no one is really helpful on what I can or cant post so I'm posting some picks of the boat so people can see it before it gets crushed.

A little background on the boat

I have a 1976 starcraft holiday 18ft with a 140 hp omc inboard. Problem is that last summer it was rode hard and put away wet because winter snuck up on me and I didn't get a chance to properly winterize it. My theory is that over winter it was pulled out of storage an the cover blew off and a little water got into one of the cylinders because one of the spark plugs was rusty and it seemed a little stiff when I first started it. But after an oil change and some tlc it seemed to run fine, had it out on the lake a few times. The other day I was running it in the driveway on the hose and it died a few times. Finally it let out a screech and stopped with a clunk. It wont budge in any way.

Re: Scrap metal

Welcome aboard thug,

Sounds like it spun rod bearing and the motors toasty. Guys talk all the time in the forum about boat values and whats a deal or not. If I had her and wasn't wanting to fix the old gal up then I would give someone else the chance to do the restore or just a motor swap. Post it up on CL and maybe someone will give her a loving home.

Re: Scrap metal

Thanks. I'm just trying find out what a good asking price for it is. I would hate to see it become junk

FYI my name is an inside joke. I've been on here for a while but haven't posted anything. I'm a stalker

Re: Scrap metal

Likely $500 with a blown motor. The OMC stringer drive is a deterrant, and a dead OMC will be valued at scrap value normally which I would expect around $450. It's quite nice so someone might go to $500, replace the engine and have a cheap boat

Re: Scrap metal

$500 is what I was thinking. From what I understand that's about what the scrap value of the aluminum is. I would be happy to settle with that knowing it was going to a good home. I didn't pay much for the boat and I have gotten my money out of it.

Yeah at 500 you'll have some guys interested for sure, especially if you have titles. Although they will start dickering with you even at that price. I got my Chief for 600 but the guy started off at 1100. If the truth be known hagglers do it for the sport so if I were you I would up the price to 800 and let em feel like they got on over on you at 500.

Re: Scrap metal

Ditto on Watermann - when I'm looking at 'no motor' boats, like this, owners often ask $1500, which is about double what they are worth. Depending on who is looking for a fix her upper, you could get anywhere between $300 and $750. If someone offers you $450, take the money and run.

By the way - you can ask what they are worth, you just can't offer to sell them here.

Re: Scrap metal

IMO $500 is fair. Would make a good project for somebody. If it was near me I would probably buy it!

Re: Scrap metal

Right now we're living in the Okoboji lake area (NW Iowa) There is a lot of money around here and not a lot of interest in cheep boats. Also there is no craigs list for our area. Its going to make it difficult to find a potential buyer

Re: Scrap metal

If you were local to me id look at it for $500. It looks to be in reasonable shape, minus the motor.

Re: Scrap metal

My guess is the trailer may be worth $500.00 and the boat value is what others have mentioned. If you scrap the boat I wouldn't include the trailer, you might get some coin for a working OMC out drive too. Parting it out, then scrapping what's left may be a good option, might yield you more $$, depend how hard you want to work on it for $$.

Re: Scrap metal

Around the middle of Michigan $500 would be really optimistic. With a blown stringer drive you'd have to find a good running extinct dinosaur to put back in there (which would be a terrible idea anyway) or go a much more expensive route (Merc or OB on a bracket). Scrap value would be about $200 after a weekend of hard labor stripping out all the non metal stuff.

Either way, please don't crush it! Put in the right hands she can have another life, she can be beautiful again!
