I recently scratched the transducer on my 400 TX Hummingbird fish finder.

The display is somewhat distorted now.

What can be done other than replacing the transducer?

Re: Scratched transducer

DoferGofer

A scratch on the transducer should not affect the operation, unless it's actually broken. You might have other problems that are causing the distorted screen. Check the wire coming from the transducer for cuts. You may have nicked a wire which would cause errors in readings. What exactly is the display doing now? Also, if you do need a transducer, E-Bay is the place to go.

Re: Scratched transducer

If it's a deep scratch. use epoxy, if not just wet sand to at least 600 grit. A smooth surface with no voids is the end result you want.

Re: Scratched transducer

Hello guys, and thanks for your reply. :)

I wet sanded the transducer with soapy water with 1000 grit and finished it off with 1200 grit finess paper, then polished with compound. It looks like a mirrow now. :D

However, :( I still have the screwed up display

The display show a lot of little retangular blocks instead of the smooth display screen before the tranducer was struck with the crab trap.

Re: Scratched transducer

did you check the wire for nicks or cuts? If you need a new transducer, Cabelas at $49.99. Not to bad!

web page

look for: Tri-Beam 90 Degree Transom Mount Transducer

I checked the wire from the tranducer. There were not nicks, cuts, or abrasions. :)

My 2 cents. The transducer sends and recives sound waves, like a transmitter and reciver. If it got a good whack it is likely broken inside.

Re: Scratched transducer

If everything else checks out, CTD makes a good point. I'd replace it!

Re: Scratched transducer

Hi guys,

Just an update on my screwed up blocky display. I replaced the transducer and the display is still blocky.
However,in the simulator mode it will draw a smooth outline of the surface and bottom. I will not see any blocks.
