Scratches in bravo one upper gear

First off excuse me if some of my terminology is off. The Sunday before last I believe I had a lower shift cable adjustment problem or failure and the next time I started the boat it was stuck in forward gear. The control would physically not go into neutral or reverse. At that point I headed back to the dock hoping it was just a shift cable problem....wrong. I got home drained the fluid which sucks because it's been maybe 10 hours since I've changed it, no metal or water. I took it to the mechanic the next day and after pulling the outdrive found my biggest fear the the cone clutch was stuck to the forward gear. It took a hydraulic press to separate the two. Surprisingly the clutch looked fine, the ribs were still all black. The forward gear appeared fine at first but after running a finger inside it you can feel a couple of light scratches on one side. My first question is has anybody ever heard of polishing a gear? There are some other issues, shaft splines coming from the lower are twisted so that needs replaced. There is a washer between the 2 bearings on the shaft with the u-joints that smashed a little possibly causing a little wear on the case (not sure about that) .

I'm not really sure what to do. At first I thought about a whole new bravo one 7k plus tax and labor then I thought about remaned but hell that's 4500 (more like 5500 because not much is good out of the core I would return) or maybe find something used and pray it doesnt have any issues? We have 3 lakes in the Charlotte area but the couple of shops I've called doesnt have any remaned units sitting around ready to go. The mechanic is coming up with a full parts list of what broke and prices but I almost dont want to fix this one with all of the issues it has.

It would have been nice if the drive waited until the end of the season to go but no such luck, now I'm scrambling for a solution so I can get back on the water. Boat is a 95 baja islander 208 with 7.4L That I paid 10k for last year. It's in pretty good condition

Check out Craigslist and eBay for a used Bravo outdrive, or at least the upper unit. That might be a better solution.

Thanks for the replies. The mechanic just called and is saying that he measured the case where the driveshaft comes into the upper and it has worn beyond service limits. That means that I wont be rebuilding this one. I'm checking with a couple companies that sell whole remaned units on Ebay. The best price so far is this company in Maryland

I've also been trying to look local for a used unit but my mechanic is saying that all of the bravos arent the same. I guess mine is a classic bravo square back of388405? I was under the assumption that if I got any type of bravo one with 1.50 gears I would be good but I guess not?

Ended up just buying a brand new drive. My case had a good bit of wear on it and several damaged parts. The price of a rebuilt unit was going to be around 4600 without a core or completly new one for 6k. Another deciding factor was going to be several more weeks of downtime. Thanks again for the advice
