Hi I have a Mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1 with power steering and at full lock (hard over) either direction I get a loud screeching sound a bit like a belt slipping. As soon as I tweak the wheel back from full lock it stops.

I would be very grateful for any tips on where to start.

Many thanks

Typically it would mean that your helm is trying to push the steering beyond its allowable travel - same as when the pump in a car squeals.

Don't turn the steering wheel so hard . . . :noidea: Is there a reason you are turning hard to the stopping point?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... It IS the belt squealin',...

Tighten up the belt, 'n Quit crowdin' the steerin' against the stops,...

Yer forcin' the hyd. system into Overload, 'n over laborin' the pump, hence the belt slips,...

Please excuse my ignorance. I am a bit of a novice and English(!)

I will check the adjustments and maybe be a bit more gentle in future. Getting onto my mooring with a lot of tide running (33' range) can get a bit exciting.

I appreciate your help.

Tide is 33 feet - you must be far north. - Bay of Fundy?

Been there done that on the mooring excitement . . . I have a 'new-to-me' 33 foot boat and it has been high winds in my area. Ran over the mooring ball a couple of times . . . dropped my mooring hook in the water and it quickly floated away in 25 mph winds . . . had to pick up the mooring at the stern swim platform . . got the dinghy line caught up in the out drives. All part of the fun.

If you do not have one, I would recommend a "mast buoy" for the mooring line. That can take some of the excitement out of picking up the mooring.

The power steering is gonna squeal when it hits the stop and you keep applying force . . . nothing really wrong.

Not far north but very far east! Mouth of the Bristol Channel in England.

Second highest tidal range in the world the first being the Bay of Fundy. Actually Wikipedia says its 14mtrs or 46 feet but we get 11mtrs on our stretch of coast.

I will look into mast buoy not sure I have seen one here bit will google it!

Thanks again

You would be fairly far north as well as east, so you get good tides.
