What is the screw behind re emblem on the side of a cobra? Ie. what is it for?

I believe it's just to plug a hole left from the casting process. I do know this...don't remove it or the plate it's screwed in to will fall down inside and you'll have to fish it out.

Don't touch it, like he said, a casting hole without a "freeze plug"

What does the plate do? I don't have a cobra, but have friend that does. Started overheating today for no known reason, but he did say he started to take that screw out last week and saw water come out, so he put it back. Don't know how far out he got it.

The impeller is new, but will check it anyway. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

behind that screw is a water passage. If he took it loose and it did not fall down inside the drive he really was lucky!
Most people end up doing that and have to pull the drive to find the backing plate..

If the plate fell off, is it in a place where it could block cooling water from the engine if not retrieved? Boat ran perfectly last time out and immediately overheated today.

Sure it could. Besides, he wouldn't be able to put the screw back in because the threads for the screw are in that plate.
So now he has no screw and a hole letting the water out of the drive.
