Figured I would share this experience...

Well, while on our latest vacation in the Carribean - we discovered the wonderful world of SCUBA. did the resort course and had two dives to 22' - what an amazing experience! Wife did it and says she is done, once was enough - but not me, I can safely say I am hooked. I have already started the PADI online courses and will hopefully be certified to 60' by the time we go south again. Just so you know - I turn 48 next month and have found yet another expensive hobby - Wifes gonna love that!

Congrats on your new hobby. It's too bad you are so far inland. Over in Goose Bay you would probably have some great diving in the summer around the ice bergs. Definitely need a dry suit for that though. Over here in Conception Bay we have the Bell Island wrecks plus the whales and bergs. It is possible to dive here in late summer with a wet suit but it's a LOT more comfortable going dry.

Thanks Man, inland waters up here are brackish and visibility is poor but further out the bay salt water takes over and the visibility improves. I see you are in CBS - we lived in Mount Pearl and Foxtrap for 15 years - I shrimp fished out of Harbour Grace for nearly 15 years. CBS has some beautiful bays - would be nice to scuba there in August

Got my cert in 97. I used to dream I could breath underwater when I was a boy. Now I live it. You don't need a starship to explore strange, new worlds, just an air tank. Also, there are many yummy things down there, and you get to take your pick, as opposed to waiting for them to bite. I think getting in a wetsuit kills me deader than the 10' climb up and down the jetty. Got a drysuit, and it's so much easier. Makes the tank last longer.

I had done the Scuba training while I was in England. Very interesting but did not do the PADI training. Still do some diving when I go on holiday in the warmer climate area.

Hmm, a couple of grand for a complete scuba set up. Not to bad but, you need a boat and you need something to tow it with, maybe a slip to keep it in... Yeah, this is gonna add up. :D

Lol... Definitely adding up...
Boat, check
Tow rig, check
Slip, built and installed

Wife honestly doesn't mind the hobbies. I play the yes dear game very well...:p

The resort dives I think are pretty cool. Wasn't cold either. I would say a dry suit is a necessity up in this neck of the woods.

As a certified diver and knowing what can go wrong on a dive, "resort dives" sure seem like a dangerous activity. Would be interesting to compare accident rates of resort divers to certified divers.

Many of the resort dives I have seen have gone deeper than the OP's 22'. Some take people down to over 30' which is plenty deep enough to get the bends at.

Scuba is awesome, I got certified in Open Water and Advance Open water last year. Dove on a wreck in Alex bay and I went diving to Belize. I just got my Dry Suit Specialty card the other day and I am excited to extend my diving season by going dry.

Once you got all your own gear, it diving can be pretty cheap. $5-10 for a tank fill and it is great if you can dive locally.

I've been certified since 01. Took a course as a gym credit in college with SSI. Didn't really do a lot with it until I moved to VT and bought the boat. Now most of my dives are inspections on the hull and mooring with the occasional mooring repair/set. (screw type mooring anchors)

Not too glamorous, but beats trying to hold my breath 20ft down.
