i've had my boat for 2 seasons now, '76 proline cuddy, with 1980 200johnson, i noticed last season that the two scuppers on the back transom that lets the water run off deck were below the water line, like the back end was sitting low in the water, could have sworn it wasn't that low season before, haven't changed anything or removed anythign on boat to change weight etc.. what could be causing this, there is no water in the bilge, should the scuppers be above, below or even with water line? thanks in advance

It's probably just that the water level is just a bit higher this year.

Scuppers should be above the waterline when sittin' still...if the boat rides lower and you don't know why...check for wet floatation...just a Thought

Re: scupper's under water line!

If its been in the water a good while the glass will soak up a lot more water than you might immagine, and that will set them deeper in the water.

What I wanted to say wasn't related to why your boat is heavier now that it was in the past - you'll have to figure out that one. What I wanted to say is that not knowing your boat but being familiar with a lot of boats like it of that general size was to look out for this. If your scuppers are the sort that have a drain somewhere at the aft end of the deck and that feeds into a hose that then feeds to the outlet fitting, of whatever sort it might be, then you have a problem. Never let the boat be loaded so that the scuppers are below the water with that sort of setup because if that hose leaks you're going down. Most of those sorts of scuppers, and there are littlerly hundreds of thousands of boats with that system, use bilge pump hose to bridge between the deck drain and the scupper outlet. This hose becomes brittle over time becasue of pollutants in the air (SOx and NOx I suppose, probably sulfur too) and they WILL crack. So this is something you need to deal with soon.

If nothing else make good and sure you have good hose on there. If you can't do anything about how the boat is setting at least do this. Replace the bilge pump type hose with the smooth bore heavy stuff, go to stainless or chromed bronze fittings, and double hose clamp them on both sides.

Oh, and if you find yourself doing that let me sneak in another clue here that should interest you a great deal. Just about all of those sorts of systems just use regular thru hulls for both the cockpit drains and for the extrenal outlet. These things are also almost all 1 1/8" in diameter.

If you replace the 1 1/8" versions with 1 1/2" you can double the speed at which water exits from the boat. Its a matter of the area of the interior of the fittings and hose. With inch and an eighth hose the area of the hose and fittings is 0.99 square inches. Replace that with inch and a half and it moves up to 1.76 square inches. So if you are buying metal fittings anyway you should move up in size. You can enlarge the holes with a rasp becasuse a little chipping right around the hole is covered by the lip of the fitting.

Thom

IMHO, you may have a waterlogged hull. That is the only explanation in my book.

Have you considered the weight of the fuel?

Tear it apart and replace your saturated coring or floation or stringers, or whatever is holding water. Not a good time. You need to do something though, the problem won't fix itself.

any chance that your motor is much bigger than the boat was designed for?

Re: scupper's under water line!

I have an 86 proline with a 200 Evinrude and with a load of fuel and 3 people on board have the same condition. I try to keep debris out of them and have never had a problem with taking on water, so I don't worry about it. It has been like that as long as I have had it, but couldn't tell you how it sat in the water when it was new. It might be more of a concern if there was a noticeable change.

soce009 - Before you go ripping the boat apart you need to see if it actually is waterlogged. To do this you need to weigh the boat and compare the weight against a like boat simularly equipped. I doubt that you have a problem but it should be fairly easy to check.

You could remove the name and replace it with the Scout boat brand logo. Then it would be normal...hehehehehe :D :D :D :D :D
