I recently acquired a Good Year Sea Bee Model 1G4 Serial Number 97713

any help or info on this motor would be greatly appreciated. I have seen a few threads on here and this seems to be the lowest serial number yet and is only the second 1G4 I seen on here....

Thanks in advance

Re: Sea Bee 1G4

It is a 1947-48 3 Horsepower, made by the Gale division of OMC.
Spark plug J-7J (Replaced by J-8C), Gapped at .025. Point gap is .020.
Fuel mixture is 16:1.
While most of the "newer" Gale products shared many components with their equivalent Johnsons/Evinrudes, I'm thinking your motor would be different than a 3 Johnson or Evinrude of the day. That is a question for someone who has more knowledge than me on these old motors.

I think it may share ignition parts with Johnson TD20 and HD25.
An odd looking setup with little pushrods operating the points.
These ignition systems are close to indestructable. With cleaning and adjustment they generally continue to operate.

Re: Sea Bee 1G4

I have no spark going to it and I took the rope pull system off hoping I might be able to take the powerhead off and get to the coil and clean it. Could not figure out how to get power head off. Prob need new one as the spark plug cable was broken at the plug... Opened up the lower unit and one side was gritty like the oil seperated and the other side was so-so, plan on changing the oil as soon as I know what oil to put in it...

Are there any sites or link to general info on these types of old motors?? I took carb off and cleaned the bowl and lines the best I could, was a shock to see a old cork float in it!@!!. Had a few lil grains of dried up gas/trash so I know this motor has not fired in while!!!.

Pulling on the pull cord the prop does spin freely so I know/hope that is a good sign!!!

Put the rope sheave back on. If memory is correct, that one has a built in flywheel puller. Simply hold the flywheel with a strap wrench and loosen the nut, then keep turning the nut and it will get tight and pop the flywheel off when (un)tightened enough. If I am wrong, and it doesn't have the built-in puller, then you need to get a harmonic balancer puller from an auto parts store.

The lower unit takes grease. Use Lubriplate #105 Motor Assembly Grease, available from NAPA Auto Parts stores.

Visit the Antique Outboard Club's website www.aomci.org

P.S. it is called a "flywheel" not a "powerhead". A powerhead is the whole engine assembly.

Go to a small engine/lawnmower shop and get some solid wire core plug wire, also new plug/wire connector and boot. It needs a solid core plug wire.

Re: Sea Bee 1G4

more likely dirty points or a bad consender. Take the points apart and clean the contacts until they shine. Don't take a hard file to them just a good cleaning will usually do. Put the points back together and make sure all the insulators are in the right places. Set the points at .020 and check for spark.

Those coils are almost bulletproof. That was before OMC learned to make the ones that required replacement every five years.

I agree, take the points apart and clean the contacts shiny bright. Take notes, there a about a dozen little insulators.
