sea drive tilt/trim

the sea drive tilt/trim that was on my boat was jury-rigged to a six-pole switch that for the life of me I cannot figure out. There is no junction box. The tilt/trim was working, but after re-wiring the ignition, it did not work. There is just a green wire (down) and a blue wire (up) from the tilt motor. Can I not just get a 3 position switch, and if wo is there no ground? Is the tilt motor grounded? Where? Help!!!

Re: sea drive tilt/trim

Hey hp.....you could use a momentary ON-OFF-ON toggle switch but it better be pretty heavy duty. The tilt motor can pull some amps going in the up direction.

And yes, the motor is grounded already so you don't have to worry about that. Do you have any of the original tilt/trim relay box left? And do you have a model number or year?

thanks guys! There is no relay box, and the switch did look pretty heavy duty. I'll try directly jumpering to the battery to test the motor. someone also suggested using automotive starter solenoids and a 50 amp fuse to build a relay box. This seems to make sense!

well, I tried jumping motor to the battery, but nothing! Don't get it...it was working. Can I take the back off the motor and check the wires...or will something pop out at me? Can the ground be bad? How can I check? I have schematic of the sea-drive, but not the tnt motor itself.

How did you hook up to the battery. The motor works by alternatively attaching the green or blue wire to the positive battery terminal and the other wire then to the negative terminal. If you did what I did the first time I tried to test this motor, I grounded the motor case to the negative terminal and then connected first one and then the other of the blue and green wires to the positive terminal. Nothing happens with this configuration. BTW, doing this does not harm the motor.

I just connected the green wire to pos battery post and nothing happened. I will try grounding the motor case this time. Thanks again!

The motor case does not need to be grounded for it to work. Just connect the blue wire to the positive battery terminal and the green wire to the negative terminal and it should run. Reverse the wires and the motor should turn in the opposite direction.

hp123,

First, you need to tell these guys your year an model because there are two wire and three wire systems and some do have relays. Mine was hidden WAY up under the splashwell. The standard 6 prong switches like you describe probably can't handle the UP amps so I suspect there is a relay somewhere.

Second you need to get a manual because it makes life so much easier.

Just my $0.02 worth,
Joe

thanx guys, po! The sea drive is from a different boat, no relay, have a manual, and it is a two wire system. I will try the green to neg and red to pos! By the way, its an 85 omc that was put on a 20' glasscraft.

Re: sea drive tilt/trim

hp123,

As others have stated, the motor draws quite a bit of current (up to 30amps). With this in mind, don't be surprised if you get a large spark when you connect the motor by hand directly to the battery. Definately would not want to have any gas fumes present when you do this.
