i have recently purchased a 10 foot rowwing boat and ive put a 4hp outboard on it. Im thinking of taking it to sea but people have told me i must be crazy. Dose anyone else go to sea in a boat as small as this or do they know anyone who dose.how do they get on and how safe is it?

Hey thar mate, you had better listen to your friends. The open ocean is no place for a ten footer even on a good day. Here where I live we are on the open ocean and every year we have a kook or two that go out here in a canoe and most times they are being fished out of the water. On the weekends our harbor is rougher then the ocean with all the weekend warriors creating some heavy waves, the whale watch boats throw a six foot wave once they get by the no wake zone. If a suddeen storm comes up your a$o may be grass.

If I were you I would keep that size boat on the lake or river. Even the sounds and river mouths near the sea get real rough. Plz for your own safety!!

Couldn't agree more. Too much ocean, not enough boat.

I've been a couple of miles offshore in my 17' CC and thought it rough with 2-4 footers. And then a group of fishermen in kayaks paddle on by me. Go figure.....

Actually a kayak is safer than a 10' open boat.
Rik, the currents are a big danger to you and you don't have the power to deal with them. You can run out the water if you get a small wave over the gunwale (always carry a bailer anyway). Waves are larger in shallow water and you might tend to stay near the beach, and get rolled.
So I'd say, if you want to be safe in a 10' boat in the ocean, be sure to carry a 17' life boat.

This is a trick question right

Where "to sea" are we talking about? I doesn't even matter, not safe, don't even think about it...unless your doing one of those M TV shows, even then you still shouldn't do it.

There are times on perfectly sunny calm days that me and my fishing bros can't even get out of Barnegat Inlet NJ on a 24 foot Parker because of the backing seas:eek:
Don't do it skipper.

10 footer does not belong even off the shore in a small lake never mind the ocean.....

Re: sea fishing in a boat

I have 10ft zodiac boat with a 40hp motor and i have taken it out. Only about a mile at most. I think watching the weather and size of waves is the biggest concern, on those occasions the water(gulf side fl) didnt even have 1ft waves and the inlet to the sound was pretty close, as well as the weather was supposed to be calm all day. So i would say there are a lot of factors involved but if i had to think about if it was a good idea too much i would just play it safe.

10ft. is too short, besides the boat most likely being a cheap open boat. Inflatables, or RIB's would be the only small boats I would take offshore, and I would say 14 ft. would be the smallest i'd be comfortable with.

I spent a lot of time offshore in a 16' w/70hp but with your combination I would only go with an inflatable. (Shucks you got your life boat going with you). Oh beware sharp pointy objects in the water if you go that route.

Not a good idea guy

I am not a pro by any means, but I have been out on the Napa River in my 12 foot aluminum boat (which is deep and sturdy for a 12ft'r") w/ 7.5 hp Honda and it's gotten too rough w/ the wind picking up. Open sea in a 10 foot boat, I wouldn't even try it.

The ocean is no joke ;)

I used to run my 16' ski boat on the Delaware River....whenever a tugboat was charging up or down the river ,...I would run like hell for a sheltered cove to escape the wake....you would need some serious counseling if you take that wee boat out of the bay,....if you could even get past the breakers in it without capsizing....

all though I was younger, we use to take a 9 ft. zodiac w/ 4 hp out to the oil rigs to fish, crazy? yes lots of people thought so at the time,.. I did not, we made it back many times, and many times we we were lucky. looking back, it was not a good idea, nore is yours, to take a 10 ft. boat, anywhere other than a small lke or pond. my advice is to find some people to go out with that have a bigger boat. life is too short, to end it so fast with a stupid mistake.

When I was very young we'd run a 13' BW 5 miles out to a reef, was it dumb sure but we did it alot, I'd be very hesitant to go out in anything smaller than that.

Re: sea fishing in a boat

in the summer when the weather is calm you see guys offshore a couple miles in john boats and little carolina skiffs around here. 100+ft of water is very close here so people run out in little boats when they get the chance.

i used to take my 16ft CC Caprice offshore quite a bit. obviously you have to be careful of the weather and pick your days. and always bring the proper safety gear, including a vhf.
