Re: Sea Foam alternative

For decarbing there is also "Marvel Mystery Oil".This is about as good as Seafoam. I have only used it for decarbing so I don't really know what else it can do.
It is a reddish oil with a very pleasant smell that seems to have nothing to do with a petrol product.
I have no idea if this is available on your Green Island.

I use BRP's Carbon Guard along with their XD-50 synthetic oil. Works great.

Yes,
The carbon guard, & the synthetic oil is the way I intend to go from now on - but having done the carbs(thanks to 'Tashas excellent sticky), compression tests(good), I,d like to run some stuff through to try & remove the muck I know is in the exhaust chambers.
I,ve never been too fussy about oil type, & lived with the mini-cloud on start up......but being a 2-stroker, in a 4-stroke group, tends to bring a bit of good natured banter my way. Do the synthetics give a noticeable reduction in emmissions then????
Thanks, DAVY

Re: Sea Foam alternative

BRP makes a product called "Engine Tuner," which does the same thing as Seafoam. It comes in a 13 ounce spray can with a plastic tube type nozzle.

Engine Tuner is applied somewhat differently than Seafoam and is not mixed with fuel. Instead, the product is sprayed into each carburetor in short bursts (basically until it bogs the motor down) while running at normal operating temperature. The entire can should be emptied into the motor. The motor is then shut down and not run for about 12 hours. Some people also like to pre-soak the pistons by pulling the plugs and spraying the foam directly into the cylinders the night before the regular application.

Plan on running the motor for at least 30 minutes after the regular application and waiting period. As occurs when using Seafoam, your motor will smoke like a house on fire for sometime after starting it up. Eventually that will clear up and all will be well.

Here's a link for some info on the product:

BTW, BRP Engine Tuner, the similar Merc product and Seafoam all smell like the same stuff and probably are.

Davy, depending on what year motor you have, if you have a primer rather than a choke system, than you can get the Engine Tuner that has the Shraeder valve on it that fits right on top of the primer solenoid, this will accomplish the same thing as spraying it down the carb throats, and may in fact work better, and is definitely easier than pulling the carb cover off.

Also it's an easy way to just stick it on and do a de-carb throughout the season, depending on how many hours you put on it. I usually decarb twice a season.

As for the question of synthetics giving less smoke, it's true they do, and less smoke means less carbon build up, and also more money. XD-100 is even better than XD-50, and more expensive. But do it for the engine not to get out of the 2 stroke banter, ha ha.

Not for nothing but I love that cloud when I start up on the morning, it's a nice way to start the morning, like the smell of coffee. Except for the whole pollution thing, that is. Don't let the 4 stoke guys get to ya, nothing beats a good old 2 stroke.

Good luck.

Re: Sea Foam alternative

Thanks for that, Cricket...
Yes I do have the primer system, so I,ll look for the engine tuner with the appropriate valve.
BTW, fully intend to continue self maintenance, & keep my 2-stk flag flying for as long as possible, smoke or not.... then sit back & laugh when the mates
recieve their over inflated dealer invoices for routine servicing, in order to keep the warranties valid!!!!!

This forum is full of so many knowledgable guys, & is a great resource for those with limited experience, like myself. Many thanks too all.

J ust want to confirm exactly which is the "Schraeder Valve" on the primer.
Is it the red plastic(looks like a mini lever)with the screw on cap?????
Thanks,
