I have dual 1985-85 Mercruiser 228 GM 305's Believe they have about 350 hours a piece on them. Everything seems to be running great. I was contemplating on the next oil change to run Sea-foam in the oil prior to changing. Is it worth doing it, or just leave well enough alone and do a regular oil change?

Well my boss swears by seafoam before dropping the oil , on older stuff. And on diesels all the time.

Geeeezz, seems like Sea Foam is the "Snake Oil" of choice anymore. You need to use it in your fuel, in your oil, before oil changes, for winterizing. Best thing since sliced bread, right?

My brothers sons girlfriends fathers friends second cousins brothers mechanic said it was junk. So who is right?

True enough, but I guess this was more of a question of "does running something like this in the oil system prior to changing get a bit of gunk out of the oil passages, circulating system, that would otherwise be left there?"

Ive heard that on older engines sometimes these deposits aid in compression/etc and getting rid of it maybe isn't worth it.

Re: Sea Foam prior to oil change?

"IF" there is gunk and crud in the engine, snake oil such as sea foam, Rislone, or any other detergent like additives are likely to break it loose. HOWEVER, breaking it loose is not necessarily a good thing. Synthetic oils may do the same thing, again sometimes it is better to leave the gunk alone rather than break it up and disturb it. I have seen numerous engines that have had a cleaning treatment with various products and they later lost oil pressure and eventually spun a bearing requiring a major overhaul. (Read as large outlay of $) The gunk that was dislodged was eventually caught in the oil pump pick up screen and plugged it up cutting off the oil supply to the oil pump. If you want to use a detergent additive, snake oil, or synthetic oil do it on a relative new engine to prevent build up, but never switch to synthetic, or use high detergent additives on an engine that may be old enough to have a good buildup of "crud" inside.
Just my .02$ (worth what you paid for it :^)

No.

Just change the oil & filter and go boating.........OR... If it's the end of the season, change the oil, drain the block and manifold drains (use wire to poke the holes) and park the boat.
