Hi .have just bought a Johnson Sea Horse 4 hp 87 cc mod no j4brhlcnr ser no b003805 i think its a 80s model. the start rope dosnt recoil back properly so i want to Get the top cover off to fix it. I have removed the 2 screws 1 at the front and 1at the back and it is still solid on there , someone told me it clipped on so i tried lifting it gently with a large screw driver but alas it is still solid on there . i was told by a engineer not to remove the screw it the middle of the top as i would release the cord spring then it would be a big job to fix , i now feel like cutting it away with a angle grinder or put the whole thing in the rubbish bin and get a Chinese one that i can get into .can anyone help please .Stuart

Model #J4BRHLCNR is a 1982 4hp Johnson manufactured in Beligum.

I don't recall exactly where the retaining bolts are that hold the cowl but normally there are four (4) of them. Hopefully another member has a better memory than mine. Just be patient and examine that thing carefully with a flashlight... you'll get it I'm sure.

Re: sea horse

Thank you both. The wife noticed I was so stressed out, she took charge and soon had the cover off after finding 4 retaining screws. I then found the rope cord spring was hanging out of the casing so I decided, after a lot of thought, to ask the wife again. She said go for it and take the retaining screw out and sort the spring out properly, so I did and found it flying in the air. After half an hour I had all parts tucked up in there proper casing and tightened and working like a dream. I now have more respect for wives, they are not just environmentally friendly dishwashers .
