Sea Impeller with outdrive on or off?

I am finishing up a bellows job, gimbal bearing, and trim senders. I plan to replace the impeller also. I was just wondering if I would be better off reinstalling the outdrive first or break down the outdrive while it is already off. I did not drain the oil yet and right now the outdrive is laying on the shop floor. Obviously it would need to be upright to drain the oil. Just wondering if it would be easier to remove and reinstall with the upper housing mounted.

Thanks in advance..

Ayuh,... That's where I always Start,....
The oil can tell ya secrets, 'n what to Look for,... ;)

It can be done either on the bench, or on the boat,...
Many here prefer the bench....

Myself,... it depends....

If you haven't had the drive off for alignment checks, lubing the coupler splines, and the ujoints, and to check for water in the bellows, then pull the drive. It's also a lot easier to do off the boat for first timers.

Don has that absolutely correct.

Check the sticky section and build yourself a simple drive stand out of 2x4 and you should have no problem pulling the top half straight up off the bottom half and extremely simple setting the top straight down when re-installing. Weight being let down easier than pushing weight up.
