It is a 69 built by Chrysler. The Chrysler manual will serve well. This motor was in production until 76 It uses L4J plugs, set @ .030,points set at .020.
Tillotson MD carb.48:1 fuel mix. 19cu. in block should be pretty light.

Nuh-uh. It's a 1968. Sea King was nice enough to state the year of their motors in the serial number. 86 (reversed) is 68--1968. Yes it is a Chrysler.

Start with a repair manual.Carb kit may be available right here at iboats.
Basically if you have done one small carb you have done them all.The Tillotson
is pretty simple just be sure all passages and jets are clear.

Re: Sea King 20hp

alright guys what year is it 68 or 69?.. my title says 69 but i keep hearing 68? steelespike you said "It uses L4J plugs, set @ .030,points set at .02". but this was for the 69? if it is a 69 great if it's a 68 is this info still the same?. also the L4J plugs what brand is that?.. i looked for them but haven't been able to find them.. right now it has champ. QL78C spark plugs but i haven't been able to find them either.. everyone is cross referencing these with other plugs?? and i know i prb have some stupid questions and hate to waste your time but i don't know much at all about outboards but i'm very interested in them.. i haven't been able to find a manual for my outboard yet... I've heard it's made by Chrysler and i've heard it's made by Gale and i'm not sure which manual to get.. right now the motor is running good.. it's got some sputs if you get around full throttle so i keep it about 1/2 to 3/4?? i don't know i may be doing something wrong i'm running 50:1 in it but the guy i got it from said it had been sitting for 2 yrs .. i put some stabil in it cleaned the plugs off and got it started.. haven't had any problems other than it's hard starting some times.. i know this is an old motor and i don't know much about it but id like to keep it running any advice would be great.. i know nothing about the gear oil? in the lower unit?.. can some one give me a little info on it or help point me in the direction of a good manual?? I really appreciate the help and know these are rookie questions but I love this boat and motor and would love to keep it running!!
again it is a mod# VWB28920A

Re: Sea King 20hp

I told you it's a '68, and it is. The "86" in the serial number is an instnt tip-off. If you want to see that model numbr in print, go to discount-marine-parts.com/ for a complete model number list. It is a Chrysler. Gale made motors for Wards through 1963.

The correct spark plug is Champion L4J, which would be L4C with the modern numbering system. I haven't checked to see if it's still made.

The gear oil (80-90 outboard gear oil) is filled through the drain hole till it comes out the top hole.

They have generic manuals here at iboats.

Also, check franzmarine.com for parts and other stuff for Chryslers.

Mercury was the last owner of the Chrysler line (renamed "Force") but has discontinued support for them. If you should get so lucky, an old Mercury dealer might still help, but probably not, preferring to sell you a new Merc.

These motors were basically the same through to 76. A Chrysler manual will serve you well.An after market manual for motors below 30 hp will work pretty well too.You may find one at the library. Most of these manuals have an
explaination of basic 2 stroke theory.Keep in mind there are no stupid questions.
