Hey guys I bought a 77' Ellite from a guy that had totally redone the boat but was unable to finish his project in favor of his job. I took a chance and bought it with 2 known problems. 1 the throttle controls were needing replacement, which I did and 2nd I had to install a new ingition switch. Seemed pretty easy, but I dont have a service manual and apparently Sea Horse engine parts are had to come by around here. I've managed to get a new switch and was able to hook it up and get the started and the elect choke to operate but there are wires I'm not sure about that still need to be hooked up to the ingintion switch, and we are not getting any spark at the plugs. It looks like a points type system. I found some numbers on the motor but I couldnt locate a plate with any identification on it. Heres what I found. 213150 and 201610

I guess if someone could give me a typical points type setup scnerio I could figure it out.

Brian

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

Your horse power mystifies me, no 77 45s that I know of in fact no modern 45s that I know of at all, unless some odd ball military or commercial.
Most outboards like yours have magneto ignition,
needs no battery. The key is simply a kill switch
when on the switch is open when off the switch
is closed shorting the ignition to ground like a lawnmower.Go to Broke boats and look for the wire color code.Lots of other good info as well.
With no exterior wires hooked up at all it should have spark and run.

As I'm not very familiar with past outboard hsitory, I'm not sure, but it's definatly a 45H twin.

Try to find the model number, Brian. Then we can verify what year and HP it really is. Look for a 1" plug on the block. It should have a model number.

Without that we are shooting in the dark.

There are almost certainly parts available, but without a model number you don't know what you need.

Good luck. :)

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

All the Seakings made up to 63 were 40 hp, no 45 hp in the bunch. Those are the Seakings made by Gale/OMC, can't speak to post 63's made by West Bend and others. If its a Gale SeaKing, look for the serial number on the transom clamp...it'll have GG in the number sequence, but sometimes the GG looks like 66.

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

The ignition switch I have is new and while the wires inside the motor are all factory (in color) the new harness I have is not.. My switch has a letter for the corresponding wire for each screew terminal.

Without out a shop manual I'm only guessing what it could be. There are 5 terminals and a sixth in the middle of the switch. The middle one has a C

one has a "M" one has a "I" one has a "S" one has a AM and one has a "B"

Is this a typical setup or am I just out of luck untill I find a manual?

B- positive battery usually at solinoid protected by a 20 amp fuse.
A- accesories(hot when key is on)
C- choke (hot when key is pushed)
S- Starter (hot when key held over in start position.
M and M Magneto(one is conn.to gnd.) black
other is conn to kill wire Black/Yellow.
When switch is off these2 are shorted together.
This info came from the Broke Boats site I told you about.Did you try it? there is tons more info.
By the way I believe your motor is
Chrysler/Force built.

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

Hi Brian
Your motor is a 1964-66 model made by West Bend/Chrysler. West Bend sold to Chrysler about this time. A Chrysler manual should help you with this model.

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

Hi brian
I am not the best electrical explainer, but here goes. There are two magnito coils mounted under the flywheel. there are magnets mounted in the flywheel. When the flywheel rotates past the coil it creates a magnetic feild. The energizes the coils, when the points open it sends spark to the plugs. The only reason your motor needs a battery is for the elect. starter. The ignition system makes it's own power. I also doubt your motor has a charging system. so the only way to recharge the batt is from an outside sourse. I may be wrong about this last statment. You turn off this type of ignition system by shorting out the magnito (a kill botton or switch).

Re: Sea King 45HP and frustrated

Brian,Here is a quote from my abos manual
"45 and 50 hp may be equiped with magneto ign.,
battery ign.with flywheel mounted alternator or
"Magnapower" capacitor discharge ign".
Alternator is obvious under the flywheel a ring
of windings kind of like a crown. You should really try to find a manual to work from, you may be able to find one at the library.Instructions for all systems cover almost 2 1/2 pages.
Points are set to .020 accuracy is criticle.
to timing.
Good luck.
