On a '59 OMC if it is the original coil you don't have to test it. It is shot. If it is cracked it is shot. If it looks like it has been perspireing it is shot. If it has a hole burned through it to the plate it is shot. If you give it a whack with a screwdriver handle and it shatters it is shot (a good one won't shatter, but don't try that with a newer one--they have a different kind of case material).

OK, to answer your question: About all you can do is a resistance test with an ohmmeter. Resistance between the points wire and ground wire should be less than an ohm, but not zero. Resistance between the points wire and the laminated core should be infinity (with the ground wire disconnected). Resistance between the spark wire and ground wire should be several K-ohms.

IM not sure if its orig... Thanks for the info. Is a replacement expensive?

coil part number 18-5181 only $19.82 here at iboats.

18-5181 $19.82 Will fit and work in a sea king 1 cyl 3hp?

How about points and cond, several gaskets?

Your help is very much appreciated, my product searches come up empty...

Oh, FR.. you were right, my coil was cracked and falling apart!!

Points and cond part number 18-5011 also at iboats

Gaskets are pretty much make-ur-own.
