Hello, thanks for reading. This is probably an 1974 Sea King montgomery ward 9.6 outboard motor that I have had to plastic weld the pulley for the pull start that was cracked. Put it back on. Repaired like new. The spring for rewind is BUILT IN inside it and is held in place by two bolts or screws. I just don't' know how to get it to rewind the rope again. Where can I find information on how to fix this rewind problem PLEASE!
Is there a manual ONLINE I can read or has somebody had this problem before and know the trick?

Thank you!

You may be able to find a manual at the library.
There is a special tool needed to release the spring and unwind.Someone may be along with info on how to fabricate a substitute tool.

Thank you very much for reading. Yes, I did look this over with my buddy and we think that the small plastic gear should be a lot more lively in springing back into the resting position after a pull.
Even if it is wound by hand with the cord handle off quite a few turns after it would have normally stopped ( in it's present state ) with the pull handle on it still does not act snappy like it should. This is what the motor looks like with the cover off. Thanks again!

The screw in the center of the pinion holds the pin that I think runs in the spiral slot.Hard to tell.Remove the screw then insert the special tool.(it is T shaped and has threads like the screw.I believe it needs to bottom before it thightens against the pin.Possibly against the top of the gear. When tight you can use it to release tension on pin and remove it.Then you can unwind or rewind the spring as needed. It may simply need cleaning and lube.

Thank you again, that is very kind of you to take the time to think about this and post.
I do believe I understand what you are talking about.Perhaps someone has one of these tools around here and we can look at it to make one like it or borrow it for the job.
Maybe now I can find out more about it with this information you provided.
