Good morning! I hate to beat a dead horse but i was given an old boat motor and am trying to find out what year it is. I did search the threads to the best of my ability to find a match with no success. I see there are some knowledgeable individuals on here. Help is greatly appreciated.

That's easy. Monkey Ward encodes the year right in the model number, the two numbers before the "X". Reverse them and you get the year. In this case, reverse the 94 and you get 49---1949.

You have a 5hp made by Gale Products Division of OMC. It has a neutral shift clutch and 360 degrees steering for reverse. Lower unit and ignition are same as a TN Johnson. Almost everything else is Gale. It is a Gale model 5D10. They also made motors for other stores. Lots of them still around and running great.

Thank you very much for the information. Rumor is, there are parts still available for these things. Hopefully get it running soon. Can't argue with a free motor from 1949 that still has spark and turns over.

Even though it has spark, you can bet the farm that the coils are cracked and no good and will let you down. They all are. Unless they have already been replaced. Feeling lucky?

New coils are available right here at iboats. Just use the 5.5hp Johnson ones for similar years (1950-1960's).
