I have a 59' 3hp (gale). What type of plug should it have? What brand is recommended? I got it started with likely the wrong plug, but it runs!!... Any advice appreciated!

59,3D15B originally Champion J4J I believe the present number is J4C.set at .030.Points at .020.Do not remove the cylinder rear end cover as it is almost impossible to re install.

Re: Sea King spark plug type Question 59' 3hp

I am trying to understand Champion letters/numbers. The closest I have found so far is a CJ6... It calls for a J4C or a J6C.. what do the letters mean when they are in a different order?

Thanks..

As far as the end cover you might ask at aomci.org.Antique Outboard Motor Club.On the plug numbers
The number is the heat range higher number higher range. One letter is the reach and I believe the other
letter indicates electrode design.Unfortunately I'm not sure which letter.
Originally on the 2 stroke plug the side electrode only goes half way across the center electrode. (J4J) Don't know if this is the case now perhaps that could account for some of the number change.Somebody out there must know
whats up.

You aren't looking in the right place. As far as I know, the J6C is an available plug. Disclaimer: they keep changing stuff. J is the thread length ("reach") 6 is the heat range, one step hotter than a 4. C means it has copper in the electrode, for whatever good that does. The old second J meant it was for two-cycle engines to help prevent gap bridging. As mentioned, the side electrode only went half way across the center one. If you really care, the new "C" one can be filed back.

A CJ6 is a chainsaw plug, smaller in size. I'm not sure, it might have a tapered seat instead of a gasket.

If you can't find the right plugs, shoot me a PM with your e-mail address.

I found a J4C today, just had to go to the right place... Thanks all. I appreciate the help, its fun to finally seeing it run after picking it up from a junk sale for $5 all frozen up. It runs, now I need to get it running well!

Sadly my 60' had the wood seats removed, but the dash is intact. I am beginning to restore her, but Im still having fun fishing in the summers, so ill do a more serious restoration someday, for now I have built some hardwood bench seats, got rid of the modern "chairs" Im restoring a 59' 3hp seaking for trolling, the 72' evenrude is a good old cruser.

Yes, its a very cool site. Great photos of what my 12' should look like! I plan to restore it to original sooner or later. Yours still has the wood intact?

Re: Sea King spark plug type Question 59' 3hp

Yes still has all its wood.Though the original owner replaced the mahogony
plywood seats with solid mahogony many years ago.Even the transom wood is original varnished mahogony in and out though it needs to be stripped and redone now.As I remember the aluminum has always been natural with no red bottom paint.Interior paint seems to be original light greenish gray.
Did you see the 15 footer that recently sold on ebay beautiful, imaculate
55 ,boat motor and trailer I think it went for $4,500.If I had the room I would have been begging the wife to let me bid.The cool part is she probably would have said go ahead!
