Sea King water pump?

My 1960 sea king 25hp water pump has been completely removed and inspected. Everything looks fine and in decent condition, except under the metal plate I found a lot of nasty gunk and something that resembled orange rubber. I looked at the manual and as far as I know there are no parts missing. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT GOES UNDER THE METAL PLATE?

I find it difficult to understand how no water gets in the lower unit through the drive shaft

Nothing under the metal plate except a thin bit of gasket sealant.

What do you mean water through the drive shaft? I suppose you are referring to the drive shaft seal. That is what keeps the water out of the gearcase.

Ok i will put some gasket sealant under the plate. whats a good sealant to use? I have to go get some for the head gasket anyway.

Where is the drive shaft seal? It must be between the plate and the gear case. Is it just a o ring that goes over the drive shaft?
