Sea Ox CC (here we go again!)

Hey All..

So I've somehow ended up with yet another boat. This one is a 20ft Sea Ox center console 200D. I think the year is 79, but not sure. This is the first CC I've ever owned and am somewhat stoked about it. It's extremely minimalist in nature and I'd love to hear any ideas about modifying it with (some) seating, livewells, etc.. It's got a soft deck so there's some work there, but the bottom of the hull and transom are solid as rock. It's got a 200hp Johnson on it that supposedly runs great.

How I ended up with the boat? Well.. I was up in NY about 2 months ago, and my cousin who had the boat has come into possession of his brothers bigger better boat (which, by pure coincidence, is also a Sea Ox) with a cuddy and full electronics. So naturally I asked what he was doing with the CC. He sold it to me for $500. All I had to do was drag it back here to NC.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I've already searched for info on "Sea Ox" but can't really find anything. A guy at a gas station complemented me on the boat and said it's a great hull, very seaworthy. This boat will be mainly used on lakes, but if it is seaworthy (Ocean/Offshore-worthy), it won't take much arm twisting to get me to trailer it to the coast. ;)

Thoughts? Ideas? Warnings? etc...

Re: Sea Ox CC (here we go again!)

a few more pics, and questions:

There is a gas tank under the deck. What is the best way to check to see if it is usable? I'm going to be tearing the decking up, probably in the spring, so I'll be able to give it a good going over then. Also, what's the best way to get the oil/gas ratio right on bigger tanks? How do you pros do it?

So it looks like the skeg is bent, but there are no marks on it anywhere. It doesn't look like it hit anything. This engine was one of a pair. Are skegs ever curved to counter the prop rotation? (I'm thinking no but I figured I'd ask) If no, what's the best/safest way to straighten it?

Sea Ox is a great salt water hull.
Great deal for $500; you could sell it to a crabber tomorrow if you change your mind.
Go walk around some marina's and look at how others outfitted theirs. The Parker, Privateer and older Prolines were similar "minimalist" hulls made for fishing or serious boat use, so look at them for ideas.
You will probably be able to get to your tank to clean it, if not replace if needed, when you pull up the deck.
Most of us fill our inboard mixed tanks like the red ones: put in a pint of oil, put in 6 gallons of gas, repeat. If you're off a little it won't matter.

Thanks guys. The more I look at it, the more I like it. I did find another forum with about 6 or 7 pages of NOTHING but praise for "Sea Ox". Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about it, and can't wait to re-do the deck and personalize it the way I want it. I can't believe how expensive T-tops are! I love the way they look and might try to make my own. As soon as I start any work on it, I'll be starting a thread in the restoration section. :D

Nice. I like the older boats. The classic lines are just too cool.

Take care of that skeg. Looks like it needs a little straightening.

Thanks! Yeah, that's what I thought too (Hence the pic of it and accompanying question).. any suggestions on the best way to straighten it?

Nice boat -- great lines and lots of potential there. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your progress.

As for the skeg, I once saw a guy put a wood block against a bent skeg then go at it semi-gently with a dead blow mallet. He just tapped and tapped against the skeg holding the block against the other side and it slowly straightened out. He was careful not to whack too hard and it wasn't as bent as yours but I don't see why it wouldn't work if you work at it slowly.

So, in your case, the wood block would go on the left side of the pic and you would tap away at the bent area on the right side, pushing the skeg flat against the block.

I've also read that you need to be careful about applying heat or you can damage the gear set.

One other note -- if you're planning on doing any real trailering get some fenders on it so you don't sand blast your gelcoat with road debris...;)

Be careful on how you anchor your T top to an old floor. If you are taking up the deck for repairs underneath consider reinforcement.

Great ride, it looks like a potter design hull, same as classic seacraft's.
Seems like a big engine for a 20 footer though.

I followed that T-Top article and made mine this summer, costs less than $300 if you have a mig, no need for the drill jig either, just make a simple version from scrap wood. See slideshow.

Oh yes... I definitely wouldn't do the T-top until after I re-do the deck, and I'll definitely be reinforcing it.. heavy duty style. :D
