I am thinking about upgrading from my Sea Ray 240 sundeck to a Sea Ray 250 slx. I know the 250 is what I want but I am having a hard time deciding on he engine. A 350 doesn't seem like enough for that much boat but how much of an actual difference is there between the 350 and 6.2? An obvious 20 horse difference and 2 added mphs but how much can you feel the difference on he whole shot, cruising, etc? The 496 would be nice but the extra cash doesn't make it practical for me as I use it for the family, water sports, and just cruising. Also if there are any 250 slx owners out there, what is your clearance of the windshield without the arch when the boat is on the trailer? I have an 8.25 foot door and was wondering if it would fit before I make a road trip. Thank you.

On a boat that size 20 hp isn't going to make a difference of any kind in a whole shot. Your not even talking a 10% increase over the 350. For what you use the boat for you should be happy. I had lots of friends with 1970's 23 formula's (same basic weight) with only 220 hp and 260 hp and it was more than enough. I have a 1976 Formula with twin 300 hp Mercs. It can scream if I want it to but to be honest I spend 95% of the time just cruising around 30 mph like most people i suspect. The performance with the 350 is respectable though. If you're talking about a new boat here are the numbers:

Performance
Our test boat is equipped with the standard MerCruiser 350 MAG ECT engine, which produces 300 hp and features a catalytic converter for reduced emissions. The 250 SLX is a fairly sizeable boat, stretching 26 feet, 6 inches with a trailering-friendly 8-foot, 6-inch beam. Unladen, it weighs 5,581 pounds, so 300 hp is pushing a lot of boat. On plane in 4.1 seconds, it has little bowrise, so our forward visibility remained excellent. Time to 30 mph was 7.8 seconds, and our terminal velocity peaked at a respectable 47.1 mph. The only other engine blocks available for this model is the 8.2L that comes in a 380 hp version or the HO fire breather that cranks out 430 big ones, which puts you near go-fast territory

Check out his video from boattest.com. They said the 350 was ok, but if you wanted to load it down, you would need the big block.
