I am having a problem getting a reading on my new Garmin 240 Blue depth finder. I mounted the transducer in the same spot that the old one was mounted (inside the hull). The old tranducer was 200 watts and the new one is 500 watts. In spite of this I can't get a reading. When I hold the transducer overboard I do get an accurate reading. I contacted Garmin Technical Assistance and they asked what kind of core my boat has. The boat is a 1991 Sea Ray 270 Sundancer. Does anyone know the type of core in this boat. <br />Thanks.

Don't know, but I would be surprised if a transducer would work thru a brand new cored hull.

Your core should be solid glass where the transducer was mounted. Some have to be mounted in a bubble with oil. I have had horribly results mounting in side,[incorrect readings]plus the sensitivity is reduced because the signal has to go through the hull.

Dump, Make sure the transducer face makes maximum contact with the fiberglass of the hull. Also, the transducer needs to be wet to work at all. As for the core of the hull, try to find the thinnest part of the hull, usually off to the side of the keel, in the bilge, where you can clearly see the vee of the hull on the inside.
