Sea Ray Gas Gauge

While out on the water over the 4th of July weekend my gas gauge decided to quit. Before it quit it wasn't 100% accurate, but it told me when I needed to head to the pumps. The boat is a 1988 Sea Ray Seville Cuddy with a 3.0 Merc.. Question is.... Is there a chance the problem is in the gauge or do I have to tear the floor out to get to the tank to fix this??

Thanks!!

Its a $3 gauge with a $5 sender. Either could be toast

A 1988 boat is coming up on 30 years old. A nearly 30 year old float on the end of a swing arm fuel sender may be a bit fuel saturated and therefore doesn't float well any longer and as a result is no longer able to make the gauge read correctly. Fill the tank, then disconnect the pink wire from the "S" terminal on the gauge. Measure resistance from the pink wire to ground. 30 ohms or thereabouts says the sender is good. Any reading much different than that says the wire or sender is the issue.

There are a bunch of fuel gauge posts here. Scroll down to look at them. Troubleshooting is the same for all of them.
